So I eavesdropped on the two guys at the archery range, but whenever I go to the range to confront the guy, I can't seem to beat him in combat. He seems to have a huge hitpoint pool. On top of that, I have a seriously hard time figuring out when to even time my attacks which results in me usually dying from 0 stamina before I even make a dent to him. I'm playing as a thief. Any tips on defeating this guy? Also, do I have to worry about him disappearing? I'm wondering if it's ok if I go about other quests and just come back to him later when I'm stronger, or if I'm going to somehow screw myself over by doing this. Thanks!

[edit]: turns out no, the guy doesn't disappear. I basically trained my character up til I had about 64 stamina and 65 health, along with a 40ish weapon skill and was able to defeat him waaaaaaay easier than before. I practiced with a lot of climbing and lock picking, as well as fighting the goblins in that infinite goblin area and killed the troll.

I only played the EGA version, but it may be helpful nonetheless. You witness two guys talking, and then one person leaves. Since you're behind the bushes, wait until only one enemy remains on the screen and then throw daggers at him. He's not significantly tougher than the average brigand you encounter in the forest. Or just wait a couple of seconds more, and then go one screen down and up. If you run into the guy who left, reload and wait a couple of seconds longer. Now you can get up close and personal with the brigand at the archery range and loot his body.

The main purpose of that fight is to get the secret door key, something completely unnecessary for the thief and magic-user. IIRC you don't even get puzzle points for doing so unless you're a fighter.
