Hi,

I bought and downloaded the QFG 1 - 5 series after finding GOG.com. I ran QFG1 (remake version) and the sound is different from what I remember years ago.

Here is the version I played when I was younger but the one I installed has different music... The music and sound are a lot more basic with simple sounding beeps and high pitched squeals on the one I just installed!

Any ideas? Is there a way to change the sound to be like the link above?

Thanks!

Many people have noticed this. What you were used to was probably the soundblaster version and I don't know why it's not the default because the "horns" in this version are incredibly annoying.

Here's the fix: Go into the folder QFG1 installed into. Drag the install.exe onto Dosbox which should be in it's own folder under the quest for glory install. Hit enter and you'll come to a screen that asks what kind of emulation you want. Now select either soundblaster option. After this make sure you select save and exit. Then launch the game normally through the short cut. This should fix it

Alternate Solution. Take the entire folder for QFG1 VGA drag this onto the Dosbox executable. Type install.exe repeat steps as previous. You shouldn't need this solution but incase the pathing screws up and it doesn't change the right variables try this. Hope that helps.
Awesome! Worked like a charm! Thanks Calik :D
This works great! However I get better sounding music from selecting "General MIDI" than I do from the Soundblaster option for some reason. Might just be some weirdness with my system. Either option is still better than whatever option it was defaulted to though.
The default is Roland, which doesn't work very well (you experienced the symptoms) if you don't have a proper emulator (or an actual Roland card).

General Midi and Sound Blaster should both be fine though, and General Midi will usually have better sound quality.
Where is the install.exe? I see the text file but not an actual setup. I remember doing this years ago, but don,t understand how to do it from Gog Dosbox.
Open the dosboxqg3.conf file in notepad, change "sierra.exe" near the bottom to "install.exe", save the file, and then launch the game's icon. It'll take you to the setup utility rather than the game.

Once you're done, change the line back to "sierra.exe".

The equivalent can be done with all four games, although for the QFG1 remake it's "scidhuv.exe" rather than "sierra.exe".
+1 for Soundblaster sounding 100x better than MIDI, at least with an on-board sound card.
