So I started playing the series recently as I remembered playing QfG3 when I was a kid but never finishing it.
I absolutely love the setting and puzzles. I hate the combat and skill grinding, but it's manageable.
What I really found was the worst thing about the games though, were the unwinnable situations, the dead ends.

I encountered one during QfG1 (VGA) - (SPOILER) I opened the gate to Hut of Brown and Bruno disappeared permanently so I couldn't get the rhyme.
I am currently playing QfG2 (remake), I'm only on day four (even though I feel like I already made a ton of progress) and I already ran into another one - I have no money for the saurus as I spent it all on day one and there doesn't seem to be any way to make money other than combat (and as a magic user I totally sucked at that whenever I tried). And now the game won't even let me get past the saurus salesman without giving me a game over

So I basically have three questions:
1. Should I expect this to happen often? If so, I might as well stop playing as it's not worth the frustration to me.
2. Is there a list of all dead ends for each game in the series?
3. Can I somehow recover from the saurus salesman situation without restarting the whole game?
This question / problem has been solved by Zachskiimage
That's how the Sierra point click games are. With QFG, I always made a save at the beginning of a game day just in case I had to backtrack every now and then, but I was patient kid back then and wanted to figure out all the little secrets of the game. I know you can haggle the guy down to an extremely low price, but I believe you're going to need some cash before entering that screen. Sell claws/tails/beard.
Bruno shouldn't disappear permanently, but it's random as to when he shows up.
As for your problem in the second game...

1. No, it doesn't happen often. In fact, you're not in an unwinnable scenario right now.
2. The only true dead end I can think of is either eating the magic acorn before giving it to the Healer in 1, or otherwise losing the dispel potion before meeting the Brigand Leader. In any case, there's a glitch that lets you bypass this - just open the character menu (CTRL C) and walk out the secret exit.
3. Yes. Sleep in the city until the Fire Elemental shows up. Go tell the Lamp Salesman and the Apothecary about the fire elemental, and they'll give you the stuff you need for free. Capture the Fire Elemental. Then check the Adventurer's Guild hall each day until Rakeesh shows up and gives you money as a reward for capturing the Fire Elemetnal.

From 3 onwards, it's almost impossible to end up in an unwinnable scenario without intentionally throwing yourself into one, and many times the game won't even let you do that. Just don't store zebra skins in chests.

I did a separate save on every day too, except I managed to get from 17 puzzle points to 71 in a single day. The days can sometimes be very eventful.

Well, I certainly cannot remember having a problem with this back when I was a kid :) But I also had much more time for gaming and different expectations. Now, when I get stuck for a longer period of time, I tend to go to Google just to make sure I'm not in a dead end (which is not as easy for QfG games as they're quite old). I'd say it's a combination of modern gaming expectations (with regard to bugs) and realization that this type of game is very sensitive. Maybe that's why we don't get many adventure games nowadays.

That's weird. I tried going back to the town gate at every part of the day for at least a whole game day (days 10-11, I think) and he just wasn't appearing.

Thank you! I am so glad to hear that. As I have gone basically through the whole city by now (with classic alleyways, unfortunately, as I didn't know exactly what that option does and didn't want to miss any content), I figured there's nothing else to do than go outside.

Yeah, the dispel potion was actually what I was worried about as well as I somehow couldn't get the dryad to show up several times after I told her "no" to her initial question. Then she suddenly did.

Thank you again for the detailed description.

I'll definitely remember that!

Bruno is most definitely NOT the only person who knows the rhyme. You should be able to learn it (for free!) from Bonehead at the gate before he sinks into the ground, or from Erasmus. Some other characters may know it too, but I can't remember off the top of my head. QFG1 is definitely the most fallible of the series so remember to always save often!

As for QFG3, consider installing this patch before starting:

It will prevent many, many problems from ruining your run and hopefully enhance your experience! :P

I would love to help the developer of those patches and see what he has in mind for QFG4. It said in the FAQ he's working on them. Anyone know how to find this "Ash Lancer?"

Funny you should ask... heheh

It's about halfway done now and the most well-known bugs have been squashed. How would you like to contribute? :3

Well, I am the admin for the Quest for Glory Speedrunning Discord server and I'm a huge fan of the games. I was the runner on this for RPG Limit Break back in 2016 when the Coles were providing background information about the game: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GAbGKVH4fHY

Our crew has actually found a number of bugs and exploits in the entire series, and one major exploit specifically in QFG3 that was still present in your patched version (hehehe). I'd be happy to share the glitches and scripting problems we've found for anything in the series, and I'd love to trade info on a screen-by-screen basis (since this game is so buggy to begin with, I think that's the only way we could handle it).

Also, QFG4 is the one game that a mega-skip hasn't been found, and we're currently hunting like crazy for it. If you could provide any details that could point us in the right direction, I'd be greatly, greatly appreciative, also!

Whoa cool! It's nice to meet you. As you might've guessed, I'm also a huge fan of the games heheh. Do you happen to have a link to your discord server? It'd probably be a whole lot easier to trade stories there xD

Pretty sure I know which QFG3 glitch you're talking about. It might've even been your speed run video on Youtube where I found out about it. I actually decided to leave it in since it couldn't really be encountered during normal gameplay. And I also didn't want to deprive speedrunners of their fun since I know there's an audience for that style of play.

I would be overjoyed if you could provide me with any info on glitches you've found, thanks! So far, I've been relying on forum posts, youtube videos, and scummVM's tracker for bug reports. QFG4 is also a huge, huuuge beast of a game compared to the previous three. I'd be happy to help you search for triggers that could skip certain areas!

Awesome! Here you go: https://discord.gg/3bQs6VG (if anyone reads this, this link NEVER expires - we're always looking for more speedrunners)

It sounds like you did catch that glitch from QFG3. It can also happen in a few other places, although it's not very useful, although one of which allows for some interesting possibilities. The others actually give me a headache.

No problem, hope you enjoy it! Let me see if I can get a mod to sticky the link. Been meaning to get that done for a while, but you know how RL is and all that heh.
I didn't know storing zebra skins in chests made the game unwinnable. How is that?

cbingham: I didn't know storing zebra skins in chests made the game unwinnable. How is that?
A long time ago I stored zebra skins in the Simbani chest, went back, and they were gone. The leather merchant didn't have enough zebra skins to sell me to complete the game.

Albeit, this is a problem I'm basing off of memory, but I'm still suggesting it just to be safe.
