By the way, back to original thread subject - Windows Quake 2 game (not winquake(1)). It is looks like common issue for some versions of Win10-11. GOGs Quake II come with preconfigured ogg music set to work properly (looks like all of 20 tracks play where they should for all mission packs).

This is strange issue since there is "security update" to broke AudioCD music but no updates to broke ogg/mp3 music.

Disc drive E/(*or first one*) (real or virtual) should stay empty. AudioCD or MixedCD in first letter CD-drive and gamr will try to play them, sometimes lead to wrong music appeared in the game (but only one track since "security" reasons of Windows blockikg audiocd discs).

Yamagi, Q2XP, Quake 2 RTX (both dxvk or opengl renders, as two differ sourceports bundled in one) and Quake 2 Enhanced is best ways in term of sourceporting it. No KMK 324/lite and else sourceports (324 is same lite sourceport as his lite sourceport just marked as "patch" for popularity - lamo way).
Also Facelift mod sourceport and DirectQ2 (v.1.1) sourceport both require compiled 3.21 patch (do not install 3.21 for anything else sourceports).
DirectQ2 1.0 bundled with own 3.21 clientdll variation but author forget to add it in 1.1 archive.
DirectQ2 can be used in same installation folder as Facelift and maybe some else. It is just one file DirectQ2.exe and will use d3d9dll from SYSTEM folder not care about opengl dll's on game root. Still with heavily modded client dll it will not work.
All of them work perfectly with GOG installation+music. As is. Some of them (YamagiQ2) allow to keep music as is and play all 20 tracks in all MPs or move-split it to separate subfolder Music in each MPs folders.
Of course CD drives should stay empty

OpenRift412: Is there a way to fix this? Is it a compatibility issue? Also, I know about the source ports, and I know about the 3.24 patch (which I'm using in the meantime), but I want to see if I can get the music working without installing any of that.
I noticed that when I used a 32-bit OS, the music did not play, Quake 2 gave an error for this dll. However, having installed the 64-bit version of the OS, everything is fine with the music, there is only one nuance - it does not play looped - only 1 time per level, or after restarting the level.
I use W7HomeBasic.

no it is not related to architecture (win7 x32 and x64 work same except x32 support x16, both work with GOGs ogg music, both didnt work with AudioCD - x32 Win7 Starter and x64 Enterprise)(only differences now Is Enterprise GameExplorer are work correctly). Some corruption of Windows OS or how you configure it. I don't know what can broke already compatible music in ogg. Then you refer to no loop and this is differ case. You talk about Retail version where music in .cda on MixedCD/AudioCD. There is such "security" updates for Vista and later to broke music loop for discs.

First to try to resolve is change security settings gs to less strict. And of course get all games and gaming clients out of system drive. Or any drive root's.
It's not even a solution - it is mandatory. Gaming clients and games don't get full access to own folder sometimes entirely blocked some dlls (even with uac and virtual store functions redirections). Also MSE/Defender by default less paranoid to non-system drives and temporary partially use as exception exe launched as RUNBYADMIN.
Just simple reinstall to STRICKLY TO D/Games/Steam/ for client and games to X/Games/SteamApps/common/ (or similar for GOG/+Galaxy) and sometimes launch gaming clients and games as admin solve most of the problems. Gaming clients even more important to installed to D/Games/ (no variations for folder names, avoid spaces "_" and special symbols).
X/Games/Game-name-2/

The only engine specific solution is keep first disc drive empty. No matter which old shooter or which sourceport of it or what disc are there.

If you have real CD disc drive better rename it to Z/ letter and keep E/ for Alcohol app drives with variety for further virtual drives letters (Daemon Tools, Alcohol Portable and Ms Win build-in - last one is worse, similar to any else 3rd party Apps - they are sources for more issues with gaming discs).

Can't say for GOG Galaxy build but GOG (offlien) build work normal. Some issues exist ofc, Q2 never work ideally on... let's say - old iD games never work properly by design (without tweaking).
....
Version specific issues only for Steam. Screwed content delivery system, client going work worse... And Desktop links never properly worked for Steam. Quake 2 is EXACT example of it. Mostly for expansions. To they working they should be started directly from Steam Library. Same for every games and applications from Steam.

Also always do (in adminrun mode of course) games verification after downloading in any clients. Sometimes better at least twice. Galaxy no more report result of verification and always redownload something. Need verify at least twice to find out Galaxy do download same files (and so most likely installscript file and OS redists for no reason).
