I've been trying to record whilst playing the game and I can't seem to suss it out. Anyone out there that can help me? I've tried doing a normal scene that switches between desktop and any full screen exe. I've tried using a game capture, which still doesn't work. the only thing I can think of that would work is running Quake in windowed mode, but whatever I do I can't get it to run in windowed mode!
Most editions and source ports of Quake, like Winquake, Quakespasm, DirectQ, etc. can easily be set to windowed mode in the video options. What "version" of Quake do you wish to use?

I have the GOG version, what do I need to do? download another program? What do you mean by which version? I'm not familiar with the Quake series in general. I'm looking to record the singleplayer campaign, along with the "expansions"

*Update* I've been able to get Quake working with OBS in a window. My only question now is how to get the expansions, Scourge of Armagon, and Dissolution working with quakespasm...
By "version" I meant if you are using a source port, so in your case Quakespasm :)

To play the expansions, just create a shortcut to the quakespasm, right click on it, select "Properties" and under "Target" add "-game hipnotic" for Scourge of Armagon or "-game rogue" for Dissolution of Eternity. For example, the target section could look like this:
"C:\GOG Games\Quake\quakespasm.exe" -game hipnotic
This will run Scourge of Armagon.

If I understand it correctly you can even switch the expansions while running Quakespasm. In the game, press the ~ or ^ key on your keyboard to open the console and then type either "game hipnotic" or "game rouge" into it to start the respective expansion.

Nice thank you! I've already begun my Let's play series. You've been very helpful, and it is very appreciated, the simple manner in which you've explained everything.
Glad it worked! Are you uploading the Let's play on YouTube, if so would you link to it? I find it interesting seeing classic games played for the first time. I'm also in my first playthrough of Quake at the moment.

Yeah sure. I do Let's Plays and reviews of "mostly" classic games. Check it out, you may find a classic game you've never played before. Here's the link to my channel https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCAK2so4H3B5gjZQ18JRBVZg

And here's the link to my Quake series https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLihYX_09XCs5xHwxlNP0q1MtINYgMkNio

Hey I just came across another strange error. I re-installed the game after completing my series, and placed all of the quakespasm files and such into the quake folder, only when I use the quakespasm Icon the game doesn't work properly. It brings me to the game screen, only the screen is filled with strange pixelated quake symbols.
Nice video series, I like seeing Let's Plays of older games by players who don't already know the game inside and out :)

Regarding your issue, that sounds very unusual. Even though you said you reinstalled the game, it still sounds to me like there is some mistake with the files. So I would advise doing a completely new installation again, maybe in a different folder, so that really nothing is left over from a different installation.
