Okay, just downloaded and happily playing the original quake. I would love to set the resolution higher, but it doesn't seem to work through the console like it used to in the old days. Perhaps I am doing it wrong. Running windows 10.

If of course this has been covered in another thread, please point me in the right direction.

You could try a source port such as Dark Places. That will let you set the resolution higher, has better support for the mouse, and will let you use higher resolution textures if you wish.

I personally use the Quake HD source port (which is based on Dark Places).

You might need to vispatch your original quake level files if you want transparent water. It may not work without doing that.
