have you cheched ../id1 folder (directory) by chance?
standard filename examples (Quakespasm, Win7x64):
s0.sav
s1.sav
s2.sav
s3.sav
...
and so on
It's your right to decide what is good for you, after that line your right is pretty much expires
I on the other side think that Quake OST is the best RED Book Audio ever created for the whole FPS genre, it's extremely creepy (and let's not forger how many ambient sounds comes with it).
If you want to embrace the true spirit of Quake with original soundtrack, atmosphere and such just check this mod called Soul of Evil (link below):

You might think that choosing Hard skill would be wise to get as much entertainment as possible. That would be a wise decision to do, believe me.
