In this guide I will show you how to get music in GLQuake/WinQuake. This only works with the base game and not the two addons. If there is a copyright issue, I will remove the contents of this thread by request.

1. Download this .zip file from my dropbox: https://www.dropbox.com/s/k4xliuhtfpwsmos/Quake%20Soundtrack.zip?dl=0
This file includes .ogg files ripped from my Quake disc, the tracks already have de-emphasis applied to them.

2. Place the contents of the .zip file in the "MUSIC" folder in the Quake directory

3. Rename _winmm.dll to winmm.dll in the Quake directory

4. Launch GLQuake or WinQuake and have fun :)

if i rename the file winmm.dll the game glquake don't work
I just installed the Steam version (which offers WinQuake as one choice) and I'd like to know this too. I can't find the file called " _winmm.dll."

I don't feel the need to mess around with any other source port either. I want to play Quake exactly as it currently is, but with music.

If it's any help to you, renaming _winmm.dll to winmm.dll returns Quake to its original (Windows) structure. Winmm.dll is an old file containing the code applications used to signal the Windows operating system to play a sound file (in modern games this is now handled by part of DirectX, winmm.dll is deprecated).

If it is named _winmm.dll, then Quake can't find it and hence can't play the music.

Hey Mr White,

thanks alot! I followed all the steps, alas, the music does not play ;-(
Any idea of what could be wrong?

Notice I use Wineskin to run GLQuake on my Mac. It plays perfectly but music does not appear even after copying all your .ogg files into the "MUSIC" folder and remaing winmm.dll.

Thanks,

Thank you very much, now the music works perfectly.

Hi Digg, could you bring down the Quake console and see what it is reporting, I would suspect it is that Wine cannot access winmm.dll correctly (GOG seem to have made their own version of it, in order to play ogg files).
Hey, can someone re-upload the oggs? The dropbox link is dead :(

Quake
https://www.quaddicted.com/files/music/quake_campaign_soundtrack.zip

Scourge of Armagon
https://www.quaddicted.com/files/music/quake_mp1_soundtrack.zip

Dissolution of Eternity
https://www.quaddicted.com/files/music/quake_mp2_soundtrack.zip
So i have to put all files into MUSIC folder? (also for Scourge of Armagon and Dissolution of Eternity?)

all .zip files include file tracklist.cfg, what now?

edit: it works fine only for Quake1 base game, not for expansions... (this when i copy all tracks into MUSIC folder; it doesn't work if i try to copy the MUSIC folder)

the .txt file says that i have to copy all files into /id1/music folder but it doesn't work...

I'm not using a source port...

Are you sure? GlQuake and WinQuake are source ports. Really bad ones.

The zip files from quaddicted are ready to use with a modern source port.

Anyhow. I haven't used either of those in the last decade, but you might find some additional information here: https://www.gog.com/forum/quake_series/quake_the_offering_music/page11
