There's a last point that I haven't seen here - apparently the "free" psychonauts version from Gametap is completely vanilla unpatched v1.0.0.0.0.0.0... etc.
With no method allowed for patching.
This is second hand knowledge and my be incorrect.
What I don't understand is that the OP claims that he has played this game for free on Gametap, yet doesn't know what Gametap is all about? They rotate their free games all of the time. Jeez, do your homework before making complaints.
Psychonauts is a pretty constant free game on GOG. I played it almost 2 years ago, and it's been in the free section since then, except for maybe a month around the merger. Psychonauts could be cycled out, but history suggests that that would be unlikely, and if you just want to run through it once and don't care about saves, etc., it would make sense monetarily to use Gametap.

You're mistaken, Psychonauts has been off of the free list more than just a month. According to a search of the Gametap Blog, just this year alone it went off of free Jan 22, came back Feb 26, left again Jun 18 and remains as a subscription-only game. That's right, Psychonauts is not currently offered free on Gametap! I wish I'd checked sooner, I assumed that the original poster at least bothered to that basic fact straight, but apparently no one has bothered to take a look before now. Best I can tell, it hasn't been available for free for nearly five months.
Not only that, but even if it were still free, it would still make sense for GOG to offer Psychonauts due to the severe restrictions on Gametap (and this come from someone who currently has a GT subscription). Sure, people can play it for free if they're willing to put up with: no 64-bit support, watching ads, online only play, no backing-up saved games, etc. but for those who don't wish to put up with those problems GOG remains an excellent option.
