Well this thread is disheartening. So basically buy it on the trendy platform or get less game. Reminds me of another trend where games release cross platform but then mods only work on one of the three major platforms. Gaming is supposed to be fun but these days it's just a bunch of deal with the devil gotchas and excuses.

I came here searching for info on mods since the "Click here" to get mods button for the Indie Stone mod site does nothing.

I explained step to step how to use mods from the workshop here:

Well, telling others what to do is often an opportunity to learn about free will the hard way. And I definitely do not condone forcing others into something they'd rather not do. Getting in to the nitty gritty of who's responsibility X or Y is, is a game I prefer to stay out of - things are the responsibility of those who assume them.

However, there is a difference between a hands off approach to a situation while letting it just play out, and encouraging a better outcome while recognizing you have no control.

Encouraging modders to utlitize multiple platforms in order to cater to your full user base seems like a win for all, TIS, modders, and users.

We encourage modders to make their mods available at HappyMods, ModsKing and on the Steam Workshop.

That line right there could be on the Mods screen right off the main menu. Though I recommend changing 'HappyMods' and 'ModsKing' to something that actually exists. :)

For full disclosure, I own the game on both platforms, so I just suck the mods down from Steam for my son to use on the GOG copy I bought for him. But that's not really the point.
@LiquidProj3ct Your explanation excludes 2/3rds of the platforms the game is for unless you toss in a guide for an uninitiated in how to use Wine to get things going. However Wine or not none of those Steam downloader tools or sites work anymore.

As for using steamcmd it's pretty much a dead end for the game client side of things. It can yank mods for the server side stuff which again will require the user to have a working server set up. Then to move things around and adapt for single player game client. Never mind how steamcmd feels like a DOS tool from the 1990's, clunky and horrid to use/understand unless you use a macro/management tool like LinuxGSM.

All in all this has become a trend and how Steam has remained a dominant -near monopoly-. Sell here and integrate our library and we give you all these great features for workshop/mod and networking. Buy from here and you get all the aforementioned things. Buy elsewhere and get the stick.

Comically even on Steam I have games that use the "modders do what they want" excuse to shun or screw over some owners of the game. Where a game is released for Win, Lin, Mac but mods only work on Win. Mod tools do not export cross platform and exclusion is pretty much the norm. So all this talk about purchase options and platform support is all just a whitewash of technically true but functionally a lie.

Gaming has become a sham...
