As with other Build games, there are several source ports available for the PC version of Powerslave, allowing you to play in higher resolutions, widescreen and with modern controls. All of these require that you own the game already.

PCExhumed
This is the closest you'll get to a "chocolate" port. Saving is done after each level like the DOS version and menus are limited to what was in that version (keybindings have to be configured with console commands or editing the config file). It supports both software rendering and the Polymost renderer (with true vertical look)

The downside is that if you don't use a Windows OS you have to compile the port yourself.

PowerslaveGDX
This is part of BuildGDX (supports all major Build engine games except Ion Fury), and is more feature rich than the other ports, most notably allowing you to save in-level.

As with PCExhumed both software and Polymost renderer are available, although performance in software mode is lower than PCExhumed. Widescreen sprites are bundled with the port.

There are two downloads available, one for 64-bit Windows users that uses it's own JRE, and one with just the JAR file for operating systems with a Java runtime installed (only x86 and x86-64 systems, other CPU architectures such as ARM are not supported)

Raze
This is forked from PCExhumed by the GZDoom devs, and as with BuildGDX supports several games. Features are similar although there's no software renderer. It also has slightly higher system requirements than the two other ports. As with PowerslaveGDX there are widescreen sprites bundled.

The devs build for MacOS in addition to Windows, so this is a good choice for Mac users not wanting to compile the port themselves

Neural network upscale pack
I'll finally take the opportunity to plug my mod (supports all three ports) - it upscales most of the game's graphics to 2x resolution.

Having played through the game in DOSbox, PCExhumed and PowerslaveGDX I can safely say that both PCE and GDX are great choices.

If you want a hasslefree widescreen experience and an easy way to load mods than go with GDX

and if you you don't mind messing around with console commands to tweak the settings and editing .def files for mods, PCE is great.
I'll ask in this thread as well how do you get the music working in BuildGDX?

Airborne: I'll ask in this thread as well how do you get the music working in BuildGDX?
I would assume the BuildGDX Readme says how to do that.

I wasn't able to find anything about it in the readme

I tried PCExhumed and wasn't a fan. Tried it under Raze and it works, music seems to be working as well same way to install it under PCExhumed. Just turn off custom messages in game (so centred messages/pulsating) as it seems to have an AL error and that will flash up if you don't turn them off.

It might be something to do with my setup though, but I'm not sure. It doesn't seem to effect the game other than needing to turn off custom in game messages and spamming the in game console.
I'll try out PCExhumed in the meantime, only thing I noticed is the readme for it says to copy book.mov but that's not in the folder. Shouldn't be an issue though right?

Download this: http://m210.duke4.net/index.php/downloads/download/9-gdxpacks/60-powerslave-music-pack
ive only used RAZE and it works fairly well

thanks for the compiled list of information here on the forums

edit: -----

i tried pcexhumed and its not great for options as mentioned. but it does work properly overall.

prior to pcexhumed (nblood pack) i used raze with your upscales
obvlously the texture pack isnt working except for GDX
but for raze & pcexhumed the upscaled sprites are amazing and simple to use

for raze ive already reported the AL error bug on github, if you compile it yourself you can remove the line that spams your console
there isnt any obvious audio error occuring that i can tell.
reminder that Raze is an alpha, and in heavy development -- but so far still my fav port

Berzerk2002: Download this: http://m210.duke4.net/index.php/downloads/download/9-gdxpacks/60-powerslave-music-pack
Funny enough, you can also just make a copy of "game.ins" in the GOG\Powerslave folder and rename it "cd.cue". This will allow music to be played from the included GOG music folder.

Interestingly the music .ogg files included with the GOG version are smaller in size than from the link above. Lesser quality or better compression, I wonder?

Can't believe I missed this part when I first read your post! Tried it with BuildGDX and took a couple screen shots for comparison. Noticeably more detailed and crisper with the upscale pack. Fantastic! Thanks!

Oh and for anybody else, the info.txt is slightly out of date in that BuildGDX is called SlaveGDX (not yet released). It's then corrected to BuildGDX in the * comment below it.

Then you got the old version. The version linked in the post is the latest one.

The quality of the music is a good question, but the GOG version's music definitely sounds great to my ear.

You may want to change the lerppu.net link to https://github.com/nukeykt/NBlood/releases/ when you have a moment.
