after the intro movie is done it just goes to a black screen and the mouse arrow turns into a hour glass, is it just loading or is there something else wrong

Which game are you having trouble with: Port Royale 1 or Port Royale 2?

In the properties for your Port Royale shortcut, try setting compatibility mode for an older operating system. That's usually my first action when encountering problems with older games.
