supersabre: As said it wont run. I only get the following message: " A 3d device with required capabilities could not be found. If you do have one, please consult the troubleshooting section of the reference card. Otherwise, run the software version of Populous: The Beginning.

I have also tried the following solution as mentioned in support: "We have included a DLL file with the game to make it compatible with recent ATI drivers. If the game crashes for you and you're using an ATI card, please try renaming or removing this file, which is located in the game's folder:
atiumdag.dll"

After i do that, the game just crashes to desktop on startup.

Help would be appreciated.
Same thing happened to my ATI 7870
It is made clear on the Populous: The Beginning game card that AMD Radeon HD 7xxx and 8xxx cards are not supported and the game will not run on these specific card versions. It is your own fault for not reading the compatibility notice before purchasing this game.

I finaly got the game to run on my computer. Windows 7 x64 using Radeon HD 5870. I had the same problem at start.

The game is using atiumdag.dll version 8.14.10.630. I removed the file from the game's folder and put a new one, version 8.14.10.0761. It's now working great !

Hope this will help people trying to run it.

But that's already explained on the gamecard, as well as in numerous threads. Like I said above, AMD Radeon HD cards in the 7xxx or 8xxx family will not work with this game.

He said he is using HD 7970. Not the really old 7xxx or 8xxx family that was before X800 and stuff. That's not the same.

What are you talking about? 7xxx and 8xxx refers to the AMD cards like 7970. I dropped the HD because all new AMD Radeon cards are HD anyway. I wasn't even referring to the old ATI Radeon cards in any shape or form, so I don't know why your bringing that up.

The point I was making is your advice does not help the OP because he is using a graphics card that GOG have specifically stated doesn't work with this game.

You are stubborn. Radeon HD 7XXX and Radeon 7XXX are not the same cards. Olders are from back to year 2000. HD ones are from last year ! GOG would not make a game compatible with 10 years old cards only. Their goal is to make old games work on current hardware ! Be logic.

Edit : And he can still try the solution I gave. I had the same problem running the game, and my card was supposed to be supported. I costs nothing to try it.

I'm not stubborn. Your the one who isn't reading what others are posting. I was NOT referring to the older 7xxx / 8xxx series of cards, I was referring to the more RECENT HD 7xxx / 8xxx cards, both of which do not work with this game. The atiumdag.dll provided in the game, and the one that GOG provides, do not include the newer HD 7xxx / 8xxx so the game will not launch under any circumstances if you are using the HD 7xxx / 8xxx cards.

I think I know what I'm talking about here so I don't need someone telling me I'm wrong, thanks. Before trying to prove someone wrong, make sure you've got all the facts and that you've read the posts properly. Start by reading the game card: http://www.gog.com/game/populous_the_beginning
Compatibility notice: Newer AMD cards (7XXX and 8XXX series) are not supported.

OK my bad. I read too fast and read "Older" on the page. Sorry. Some games were with the mention about not being incompatible with older cards.

To get back on topic and try to help him : is there not a new atiumdag.dll file that supports those cards ? Some game using that file and working with his hardware he can copy in Populous folder ?
I think that I have found a temporary solution to the problem of 7xxx cards and 8xxxx

1. Download atiumdag.dll file and replace in populous 3 folder ( i cannot post any links... its version 8.14.10.0761)
2. Only work Software version popTB and popTBUW run in Populous folder
3. Open the file (popTB or popTBUW), minimize the game and in the task manager disable Explorer.exe
4. Maximize and enjoy the game without errors graphics
5. After the game, in the Task Manager you are run Explorer.exe

I knowIt this is tiring but you can play with that super game.
I don't know how change a bigger resolution.

Where did you get this atiumdag.dll from ? If it's the one from GOG.com, I have already said that it won't work with game (GOG themselves have specifically stated that 7xxx / 8xxx cards don't work)
A little testing my solution with Explorer.exe and overlooks the fact that it works, but sometimes crash out to the desktop. I hope gog will though try do something to make the game work without those weird solutions.

Hi, i have the retail game on CD still and face the same error.

I can run the game in Software mode without problems (ofc explorer.exe because of colors must be closed)

I want the game to be run in Hardware mode though. My GFX Card is an AMD XFX 7850 2 GB! As stated by gog, 7xxx and 8xxx series are not supported in D3D.

However, i found out, that when you run populous 3 in VMWare Player 6 with Windows XP SP3 (32 bit), it works with Direct 3D Hardware mode. It's not playable because it flickers the whole time between ingame and loading screen, maybe i could make it run if i try to adjust the settings.

My main purpose for this was to look if its working in a vm with hardware mode. So it does. That means that our 7xxx / 8xxx are able to run the game in hardware mode.

I hope that some smart guys picking this up and maybe also look into it and try to find a solution on how we can maybe benefit from this, finding the problem and make it work under our normal Windows 7 x64 systems. Maybe even the GoG staff can look into this and help us getting it to work with 3D Support! :)
