Another fan of the initial look before modding.
It certainly was a pain in BG at times, but for planescape it just seems to 'work' somehow.

As clunky as the default resolution is, I have to agree that it just feels right. I tried setting it to 1280*1024 (yes, I still don't have a widescreen monitor... doubt I'll be able to afford one for a while, either) and it looked like, I don't know, a Fallout Tactics knock-off. You know, one of those games from East Europe that will pop up in the review section of a gaming magazine about once a year and that looks exactly like every game like it since 2000, always using the same isometric 2D graphics. The game was obviously made with a close-up view in mind, and a higher resolution makes for a more disconnected experience for me.
Kinda curious how it looks if you only adjust the aspect ratio, though. Anyone got a screenshot of x*800ish handy?

I hate widescreen mods for isometric games. Unless you're projecting it on a friggin wall, everything is just too damn small. I think the designers made it the distance it is for a reason and I think it works best in that position.

Well, personally I do like how the zoomed-in look feels. I would prefer it if there were a way to explore the gameworld without constant clicking, but I do think the close-up view is quite nice.
That said, I play at 1366x768 with the widescreen mod. I play the game on my 15.6 inch laptop, so I'm always sitting close to it. Scaled 640x480 is genuinely eyestrain-inducing, as I've learned by playing BG1 at original res. Most of the details are still large enough to be clear at such a low resolution, and I don't get a headache, so it's an acceptable compromise.
