I can't remember this happening in the olden days of playing the original Pirates! - but for some reason my crew went from happy to angry and extra mutinous in the blink of an eye, after a victorious battle. There was plenty of food, so it wasn't that.

Could it have something to do with going over somewhat 300 thousand gold (from picking up treasure fleet, inca treasure and silver train on the first expedition by luck - as well as a number of cities of course)? It happened twice, first after plundering Panama for nearly 100k gold, then on a retry without the Panama trek, after conquering a few more cities and getting to that level of riches.

Divide up the plunder was also odd: each crewmember got some 600 thousand gold, I ended up retiring and being extremely wealthy etc. but pirate points were something like minus 40...

Hmm. Sounds like overflow errors. Depending on how Pirates was programmed, some of the internal counters might have been kept as an signed integer, which in spite of displaying correctly to you, might have been something like -225 to the code.
