So I've heard good things about both entries, though Dead fire specifically catches my interest. Can I get some pros/cons of both and which one ultimately would be most beneficial of buying and why?

I've played infinity engines games growing up except for Baldur's, and enjoyed them thoroughly, any similarities in a good way?

I haven't played Pillars 2 yet, but I am working through the first one and enjoy it a lot.

The pillars 2 game follows the same character, so it may be beneficial to start with the first for the story line.

They're pretty similar in terms of mechanics. Main difference is the setting. Second one starts right where the first one ends, so logically it would make more sense to start with 1, unless you REALLY need to jump into ships&pirates right away.

Both PoEs are pretty similar to BG and other Infinity engine games.
