It changed the game from getting xp in certain skills by using them repeatedly, to that having no effect and instead getting xp only from completing quests, opening locks, etc - much like these older style crpg's. The level up screen was different too, you got a certain amount of points to spend and put wherever you wanted your pc to improve (again, like the older crpg's).
It also had the added effect of making leveling much slower.
