Even with my ships being setup to see mines they just don't so they cruise in huge mine fields and get destroyed in the process. Anyone else coming across this problem or is there a way to fix this?
There is more than one tier for cloaked mines. You need to research the technology for advanced cloaked mines, and install at least one of the "advanced" mine sweeper into your fleet of ships to see them. I think that's how it works.

Yep, in order to see those mines, better get higher minesweeping techs. Some are tracking I think, been so long since I played this.
Remember to equip weapons in the "Point" slot as well, just in case you forgot. :)
A little late for the OP but informing future users.

Mines have 3 tiers:
proximity
tracking
smart

proximity does not move*
tracking tracks from short range
smart tracks from long range

* an idle mine may move to replace a destroyed one giving the appearence of tracking. All tiers of mines do this.

You need the same tier or greater sweeper to see enemy mines. It is in the Special catagory when designing a ship.
You have to research the mine tier before you can research its correspoding sweeper. If you're researching this in response to enemy mines, this can delay your conquest for 2 techs and the relevent refits.
While you technically only need 1 ahip in the fleet with a mine sweeper on it to see the mines, you might not want to put all your eggs in 1 basket. ie it gets blown up.
