Bought this a long time ago, started playing with it today.

Twice I have gone into the menu, saved the game, and come back later to be told that there are no save games. I've hunted around on the drives, checking appdata, checking Documents and the program files folder, even searching the entire drive for the name I gave the second save.

I searched the forum and didn't see any reference to this problem for Patrician 3, though one person had a very similar unanswered question for Patrician 2.

Anyone have any tips on how to get it to save/where I can find the saves?

(ETA: This is definitely a virtualstore/permissions issue. When I ran Patrician 3 with elevated access, it saved into a saves folder that previously did not exist in the program files directory. ...But it doesn't appear to be saving into virtualstore when not elevated.)

It should save in a "Save" folder in the game directory.
Did you install the game to the Program Files folder? If so, I think that explains the permissions issue... That folder is protected, which can interact with how games work. In this case, I'd advise installing it somewhere else.
For my GOG.com install, the path was
C:\Users\{your-user-name-here}\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\GOG.com\Patrician 3\save

I used Windows Sysinternals Process Monitor to find this out. It is a free official Microsoft program. You just have to create a filter for the process name "Patrician3.exe" press Ctrl+E to start recording the logs then load/save a game or wait for an autosave then you will see in the logs where the file is stored. This way you can find out the save file paths for any game.
