Hello.

So, this is a rather long post, here is some music to help you get through it.

I was having a blast playing Patrician III again after so many years, everything went well after the first GOG installation, no need to set up anything special to make it run on this Windows 10 laptop.
And this morning, for no apparent reason, the game wouldn't start. It would just go "nope" as i hit the Play button on Galaxy: the button would reset to its initial state without anything happening.

So I tried everything. EVERYTHING.
First i tried to run the Graphic card tests again. None would work. And now the game would complain about me not having tested any resolution... It made my face go from "mildly concerned" to "intense frowning".
I looked here and elsewhere on the internets and saw a trick that implied DEP ("Data Something Protection"), so I did what was recommended. Didn't work. I tried to apply these DEP changes to both the game exe and the Graphic Test exe. Still didn't work.
Then I downloaded the registry file a Gog Team member had sent here on the forums a few years ago. Runned the Graphic Card tests again. I think at this point one or two would get to work, but the 800x600x16 wouldn't, and that prevented me from getting to the game menu.
I checked the 1.1B patch that was available on fan websites to see if it could help in any way. I made sure the DEP was also set on the patched files i just downloaded. Guess what ? it wasn't of any help.
I tried again all of these solutions in another order, and ended up with varying results. As of now, I'm stuck in a state where the intro video would start, and skipping it or waiting for it to end would get me the "Set Display Mode Failed" error message, which would still get me to a black screen afterward, leading to another error message implying this pesky "xcd000005" thingy. Note that The Graphic Card test is now working with only the last 2 resolutions not being available.

Now, between all these steps, i restarted my computer several times. The Windows XP compatibility setting in the executables didn't change anything for both the game launcher and the graphic card test launcher at any point, and I kept unabling and disabling them several times inbetween steps.
It's also worth mentionning Gog overlay was disabled from start to finish.

It's been 2 hours now and I'm starting to run low on hints for how to make my game start again. I'm tired of trying useless fixes.

Does anyone have anything in mind I havent' tried already that could help me ? :(
Or maybe a step by step procedure I should go through, starting from a fresh GOG install ?

Hi Douzeju,
you can solve this annoying problem going to gog's official site (here: https://support.gog.com/hc/en-us/articles/212451369-Patrician-3-The-resolution-800x600x16-could-not-be-initialised?product=gog ) and follow the instruction.
It worked for me, hope it works for you too, bye.

ps: nice song.
