I've been getting the Runtime error whenever I try to run the game. Strange thing is that yesterday it was running fine.

Only thing I can think of is that while starting a Steam game yesterday I accidentally clicked on cancel during the initial setting up process, and it may have been setting up the Microsoft Visual C++ Library, which is the source of my problem here, but even them I don't see how that would have screwed up things so badly that a GOG game wouldn't run.

I tried redownloading the game and reinstalling it, as well as downloading some Visual C++ Libraries, but nothing seems to work.
Wait, it's working now.

I downloaded the 2013 full Visual Studio, it was a 10gb install with the entire suite.

The game still crashed, but now with this one installed I had the option to choose debug when Windows didn't find a solution to the problem. Then a bunch of code would show up onscreen, none of which I understood. It still didn't work, but I tried it one more time and now it does work. I have no idea what happened, I'm just glad the game is running again.
Alright, if someone cares, I figured it out.

Installing the game at D:\ makes it work. That's what did it before. When I tried moving it to the regular GOG folder it stopped working again, so I guess I'm just gonna leave it here from now on.

And just to clarify, it shouldn't have anything to do with permissions since, even though in the compatibilities section this is already checked, I made sure to run everything as administrator anyway.

I don't have a drive D, but changing the install directory worked for me anyway. I was playing on 1.0.37 for a few days without a problem. However, when I accidentally started up multiple copies (five I think) of the game simultaneously, every instance of the game client would crash on start-up. This included the five simultaneous starts (I think) and every start-up after that.

When I reinstalled the game it worked fine at first, but once I patched it to version 1.0.37, the same error occurred consistently. After uninstalling and installing into a different directory, it seems to work fine now even after applying the 1.0.37 patch.

Obviously it's not ideal that a corrupt install requires a new directory, but at least this has been working for people as an interim solution.
It's actually enough to just rename the original folder. Mine was installed in "Papers, Please" so I just removed the comma, making it "Papers Please".

Game seems to be running fine.

Thank you so much, I did this too, and now it works.
