Has anybody stumbled across any mods for this game or any way to mod it? There were no editable or replacable files except audio files that I found, so other things may have to be unpacked. Has anybody else looked into this?

I know that the beta had explicit modding capability, but this was limited and was removed from the final version. The author stated that he didn't have the time to support modding and isn't adding modding support at this stage.

However, I'm sure someone will figure out how to mod it anyway. I for one would also be interested in this - this seems like the perfect game to add more characters, text, story arcs, etc. that it would be shame not to.

I wonder if he left the hooks in the code to make it semi-functional even without explicit support. I never played the preview, but everything you said lines up with what I've read.
Lucas Pope removed modding in the full version because of a few nazi germany mods that where made for the beta. :\ I don't agree with the removal but yeah thats why he wont add the capability in the future.

Oh, I thought it was a technical problem with supporting it. That's a shame, he shouldn't feel responsible for third party modifications. People have made some terribly offensive things with editors from big companies like Blizzard, it's just a matter of having a EULA that makes it clear there is no affiliation.

sadly the problem is EULA's do little in the common public eye, very little so if someone is displeased by a mod's content, they commonly back their displeasure with lawyers.

It's a crazy world we live in.
Dang, I thought it was a technical/support issue as well. You sure that's the reason? His website FAQ still maintains its due to technical reasons:

Does the retail version support mods like the beta?
No. The beta had very crude mod support and left many things uneditable. I didn't have the time or bandwidth to expand this to a full modding system. If there's demand for it, I'll add full mod support in a later update. The beta will remain available at dukope.com for playing any mods created for it.

I was always under the impression that a company is not responsible whatsoever for third-party content. Naturally a small player is easy to spook, since who wants to waste their life's savings fighting a pathetic lawsuit that should have been thrown out? But if that's true then the world is once again moving in the direction of ever-increasing stupidity - ideally a company should quite simply never be held responsible for mod content, end of story, case should be thrown out, person who put case forward should be publicly executed as an example to others.

Too extreme? They'll never learn otherwise... ;)

But yeah, I couldn't confirm that suing rumour, so until someone proves it I choose to believe it doesn't exist... ;)

I also heard that he may add it back in if there's significant demand - so it might not hurt to hassle him on twitter or his forums of whatever about it.

Good information, Squid, thanks for sharing. I think I shall pester him somewhat as you suggest. It can't hurt!

Lord_Kane: what suing rumour?
Well technically it wasn't a "suing rumour", it was a rumour that the developer had removed modding due to a Nazi mod, and then others speculating that someone may have sued (or may sue in future, or the dev thinks that someone may be considering the possibility of suing in the future). You being one of those others btw... :)

I just conflated these rumours and speculations into each other, in order to wreak havoc and confusion! Just kidding, it just kinda happened. Apologies for the perceived misinformation.

Yep. Starting to think I should have fed this some more, it could easily have turned into some uber-rumour and very quickly be all over the web before someone shuts it down. Guess I'm not evil enough... ;)

Speaking of which, if you've played Don't Starve and seen the random stuff that appears sometimes on the wiki - stuff that is totally not true, but just gets pasted on there as fact... It's pretty amazing sometimes...

Internet is kinda known for wrong things being passed off as fact.

True that! Although in gaming environments these fake facts tend to get sorted pretty quickly - at least in most games. In this one, not so quick.

Maybe it's 'cos I look at the code (which is nice of them to be able to do that without having to decompress or do anything else), so whenever I find something that sounds suspect I check into it. The code doesn't lie...

I guess it's just such a massive game with new content coming in every 20 days (!) for free (!) that this happens...
