Could you please take a screenshot of the error message or type it on here exactly as it appears?
it's just the generic "PG2UK220.EXE has stopped working" with only option of closing program or closing window.....i must have canned the desktop icon for it cause i had to start it from the 'start tab' this time.....last night the message was similar but said "PANZER2.EXE has stopped working", etc ......as i am not adept at computer management as many here, i am a little frustrated because i wanted to just download it and play-longtime pg1 fan here-also, if there is a similar title out there but with more expanse that isn't the boring HOI series, could you recommend one? i tried HOI 1 and 3 but was unimpressed. thanks for the help-

Not sure about the HOI games but lets try getting your PG2 to work first. Ok theres another couple threads here

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/panzer_general_series/panzer_general_2_vs_windows_7_64_bit_home_premium

and here

http://www.gog.com/en/forum/panzer_general_series/pg2_with_vista_ddraw_dll_error

Which apparently sort the problem.

Now I'll try to walk you through how to do all that step by step.

First you need to download and install directx 9.0c from here

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/en/details.aspx?FamilyID=2da43d38-db71-4c1b-bc6a-9b6652cd92a3&displaylang=en

Click the download button and select open or run this program from its current location. If it asks for permission to install select yes.

Once thats installed you need to go into your Panzer General 2 folder and find a file called DDRAW.DLL once you find that right click it and select rename. Just rename it to GOGDDRAWGOG.DLL

Now try to run panzer general from your start menu and see if it works. If it does your good to go if not you need to right click the game in the start menu and select properties. The go to the compatibility tab. If your on windows 7 or vista select the run this program in compatibility mode for and select Windows XP (Service Pack 3).

Then under the settings options on the same screen tick all those boxes so run in 256 colors, run in 640x480 and the other 3 below those 2.

If your on windows 7 or vista you will also have a Privilege Level setting tick that as well which will be Run this program as an administrator, if your on XP already you won't need to and shouldn't have the option.

Hopefully all this gets the game running for you with no problems.
thamks a lot-all of those things worked except for the issue i am now having with the mouse freezing and i can't get off of the main menu bar after selecting a campaign-is there not a more dependable version of this game anywhere? i accept the fact that i have potentially WASTED ten bucks! I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE GAME-GEEZ!
Unfortunatly this gog version probably is the most dependable for alot of people, just some reason its not working for you. I was afraid you would have mouse problems after all that, for some it seemed to work and others they eneded up with mouse problems.

Its listed as windows 7 compatible on the game card so you could contact gog support directly and see what they think.

If your still up for trying to tinker about and get it working I have a few more sugestions. Go to the games compatibility menu again from the start menu and this time try to set it to windows 95 compatibility and then try it to see if it works. If not go back to the compatibility screen again and try unticking the 256 colors setting and try again. If that doesn't work try setting it to windows 98 with and without the 256 color settings and see if any of those combinations help.
I also I have the same problems. GOG would have to sue for fraud because it does not work the program to anyone.
Thank you very much for the excellent info Ralackk! I had the same problem with the DDRAW.DLL and run problem. Now I can finally play the game.
windows 7 users , follow rallacks excellent advice , i just installed the directx update and it works first time , thank you rallack , i had tried everything else ,jc

Just wanted to say thanks for taking the time out and helping me get this game going. All I had to do was DL Directx9 and that got me going..
No problem guys glad at least some of you seem to have it running now. Would be nice if tnadam posted if he ever got it working or not though.

Thanks for your advice - I had the same problem with the .exe crashing. Change the ddraw name and everything running now.
along with everyone else your advice helped me as well. I had the same problem as tnadam did though with the mouse. I decided to mess around with the compatability to see if that helped. I just changed it to Windows XP (service pack 2) with 256 colors checked and the mouse seems to be working for now. Thanks again.

by the way...just for informational sake I have a Vista

As far as i know tnadam did not. I have never gotten this GOG game to work after following all of the tendious fixes and downloads, and file renames, I am still frustrated. Since there there are no refunds, it will be deleted from my harddrive - final solution. Games should be at some level of operational when sold!

Thats one of the downsides to an open platform gaming system, even if a game works on 99% of peoples machines theres still that chance it won't work on your hardware and software configuration. Theres just too many combinations to gaurentee that it will work on everyones machine.
