The game crashes frequently, have tried a few workarounds but little luck so far. I'll start by saying I have a non-standard system and that may be a big part of the problem. The crashes appear to be random, ie: not triggered by the same thing every time and not related to play time.

Sometimes the error log blames "d3d11.dll" so I tried forcing the game to run DirectX 9, but it looked like garbage and was even more unstable.

Sometimes the game crashes after sleeping, during combat, moving between areas, or even after using the map.
I have tried running in "Compatibility mode for Windows 7", lowering the resolution, running on Medium graphics settings, and updating my graphics card drivers.

Here are my PC's specs:

Windows 10 Enterprise 64 Bit
AMD Radeon RX 470 4GB
Dual Intel Xeon E5520 2.27GHz CPUs
24 GB RAM

My video card driver date is 9/9/2019

2.27GHz may seem slow, but both CPUs can run reliably at a boost factor of 3.2GHz+

My system is fully DirectX 9, 11, 12, etc. compatible, and have not had any problem with other games such as "DOOM 2016" "The Surge" "Conan: Exiles" or any of a number of games with higher system requirements running on high or ultra graphics settings.

Any thoughts?

Having better luck since running in "Compatibility Mode For Windows 7", running the game on Medium settings and lowering the resolution to 1280 X 720

The game is running smoothly and I am having no issue traveling between areas or entering and exiting dungeons.

Will continue testing the game and I will update this post again if I run into problems.
Yeah, my girlfriends game is very unstable. I think it's always a dx11 error for her but same as you she has had no troubles in any other games so far. I own it on steam and she owns it on GOG and I've installed and tested both steam/gog versions on her system with troubles in both. I'm going to toy with rolling back her drivers when I get a chance and then I'm going to try swapping gpu's with her to see if anything changes.

She's running an i7 6700k and an r9 Nano currently on 19.10.2 driver with 32gb ram

Game got worse after a driver update, and other games crashed as well (that I previously had no trouble with) Thankfully I had the full AMD software with driver version 19.8.1 saved on a flash drive. I have given up for now after my whole system locked up 3 times while playing Outward, and one time black screen with black screen flashing, then static on the monitor like an old TV.

Other games are working normal again after the driver rollback, just played "Wolfenstein: The Old Blood" for 3 hours with no problem, so it's not that my rig can't handle it. I became very suspicious when DUSK crashed, which has never happened before in the 10+ hours I have played that game.

Thank you for your reply, I feel less alone.

Bought a copy for a friend of mine and he had no problem running Outward on Windows 7 with a 3.1 GHz i5 and an older AMD video card.

So, not sure whether the issue is just Windows 10 or an incompatibility with my graphics card.

Okay, from what I have researched and tested, running the game windowed instead of full screen seems to help. Played for an hour across two zones and went in and out of a couple dungeons. Tested other things that caused crashes like using the map in the wilderness and opening chests, etc.

Seems to be a viable workaround.

Maybe this will help, fadingphoenix with the trouble your girlfriend is having.

I hope this helps other players who are having problems.
Hey, thanks for updating. I've only gotten to test your solution temporarily by myself and we haven't gotten to play together again yet. Seemed promising, but hesitant to say yet.

Still running solid for you in windowed mode?

As far as I can tell, yes. Running in windowed mode without crashing.
Though, like you, I haven't played in a while. When I get back to playing, I will see how long I can play reliably in windowed mode (while trying everything that made the game crash before ;-) ).
** UPDATE **

Okay, so it turns out there is some sort of compatibility issue with Radeon graphics.

I swapped out my Radeon RX 470 4gb with an Nvidia GTX 960 4gb I had lying around and guess what? No more crashes.

Been playing in Windowed Mode on Medium settings at a resolution of 1600 X 900.

Sorry to say it came down to graphics card compatibility. The old "When in doubt, use Nvidia" standard is getting annoying, but it works.

Was having frequent crashes in some other titles like "Lords of The Fallen: GOTY" and "Bulletstorm" every 5 - 10 minutes or so, not triggered by specific events but very consistent.

So, just turns out that Outward plays best on Nvidia.

Hope this helps.
Oddly, right now we haven't been having any other issues. We're both running AMD cards and I still haven't had a problem once. She hasn't crashed again since my last post on here, and she's even running it fullscreen again without issue currently. I'm sure it's probably going to pop up again but we've had two long play sessions now with no problem and we couldn't do that at all before. Very strange.
Okay, so we had our third successful long session of gameplay today with no trouble. The only thing we changed the other day was we noticed that the "Online Region" in the settings was set to EU and we changed it to US; haven't had a problem since. I don't know why that may have possibly been causing a dx11 error for us...very skeptical that that's what it actually was; particularly since I know her game would crash even in solo, but that's all we did. Will update if we start having a problem again.
In about a week or so I will be upgrading to a Lenovo Thinkcentre i7 4770 at 3.4 GHz, 16gb RAM, Nvidia 1050 ti 4gb OC (Overclocked Edition) with Windows 7 Ultimate. Which is oddly enough a bit of a downgrade as far as the dual CPUs in my HP Mini Server (Workstation)

Will let you know how things go, fadingphoenix.

My new card will be fully DirectX 12 compatible and I'm hoping that relives some of my woes.

It's good to hear that you have had successful runs. Outward is a bit on the "back burner " for me as I have been playing "Lords of The Fallen" lately and have been enjoying the "souls-like" experience. Though I find "Outward" more charming as the focus is on adventure, rather than quests. I like adventuring without feeling like I am forced toward some goal. ;-)
