TLDR; Website download is outdated and missing refinement and QoL features.

Be warned that if you download Outward from the GOG website and not through the Galaxy client you might be downloading a version that is outdated. I always download my game from the website but I wasn't happy with my performance so I decided to try downloading through galaxy so I could use the verify installation function just to rule that out.

The first odd thing was I had to redownload the entire game when I used my website version to install the game for Galaxy to detect. 8gb later as I was play testing the game I noticed a few things that the website version does not have. Namely things like item glint to show you can pick up an item. Also I noticed on the website version the beginning inside the Inn there were poles that were sticking weirdly through the ground and second story floor which I thought was just some really weird architecture design. Those have been removed in the Galaxy version and to me highlights that the website version is an outdated or potentially beta version because having the poles sticking through the ground like they seemed pretty hard to miss and I couldn't imagine it being released in the full game like that. Unfortunately I didn't take screenshots of the website version but it's fairly obvious if you were to compare yourself.

On the topic of performance updating didn't help but at least I know now that I'm not playing an outdated version. I only played the beginning area so there is the potential of being bigger, far more glaring issues the deeper you go into the game so I'd recommend downloading Galaxy and download the game through Galaxy. Hope this helps some people out and if someone could notify the devs or GOG about the issue that'd be great! Take care!

Edit: I also just noticed that the files on the website state they're version 0.9.1 and not 1.0

Edit 2: See attachment for comparison

Final Edit: Problem has been fixed so if you're using offline installer you'll have to download the new one!

The never ending push to make people use yet another damn software. Damn Galaxy, guess I have to install it now.
I'm getting a bug that doesn't let me enter Berg, even though I haven't joined any faction yet. Hope the Galazy version fixes it.
I followed the post above and installed galaxy just to install the game. It worked great!
Yeah, had the same thing happen to me. Noticed when trying to install mods. Fucking bullshit.
Don't advertise as DRM-Free when you force people to download your shit anyways.
The Outward offline installer was updated today. Not sure if it's the correct version as I'm too deep into my own game to test but I'm assuming it is now. Feel free to let me know here otherwise.

It says 0.9.0 (on the website)

Oh when you download it the file itself says 1.0

Interesting. Yesterday, the offline download version was listed as 0.9.1, and now today it is listed as 0.9.0. I was wondering if they regressed.
GOG has a weird patching number system. I would of assumed 1.0 would of been the version number they used for the first release on GOG but I guess not.

As I edited, the actual file when you download is now 1.0, not 0.9.1
I think it's a simple mistake on the site itself.

So if you download the installer listed as 0.9.0, you get the correct version?

Can you tell me if the mods work then?

I tried to install some of the mods on the original download version, but couldn't even find the "Managed" directory or any of the DLLs that need to be modified.

Not sure about mods but by what I'm understanding yes it is the correct version.
It seems that Outward in the 0.9.1 GOG installer on website was not outdated but just experimental build (OTW_19-10-18_1400.txt) on Unity 2018.
And GOG installer version 1.0 contains stable build of the game on Unity 5.6.

News from Outward developers on Steam at 2019-10-04:
"We are also currently working on another patch in which we update the game's engine (update from Unity 5.6 to Unity 2018) which should increase general performance, stuttering and fix a bunch of crash issues people were experiencing, especially in Enmerkar and Abrassar. This will eventually be available in the Experimental branch of Steam like the patch we release today was."

So can we play multiplayer online or via network using the nexus mod to reach 3 players using the non Galaxy version at this time or not?

I'm not 100% sure but I believe so. Haven't tested it personally.
