Okay, this was an insta purchase and insta download, jumping to the top of my backlog to play, as eight-year-old me can still recall the demo with remarkable clarity.

And so far the game is running great. Smooth, dare I say flawless. But it's running through nGlide and 3DFX mode...

I suppose it's just me, but I love the old, jaggy software mode from my youth. I play Quake in software mode, I play DOOM in Vanilla DOOM, and I'd love to play Outlaws the same way, without the weird hyper-scaled textures and smooth sprites.

So, my question to everyone is, can it be done with GOG's version? Is it possible to bypass nGlide and play the game, hopefully stable, without the 3DFX emulation? I've tried running the old .exe on its own but it crashes immediately. A quick Google search turned up nothing, but I've yet to dig deeper. I was just wondering if any old-time fans had an answer.

If not, I can live with 3DFX...but egads, pardner, it don't seem quite right somehow...

If you use the OLWIN executable it bypasses NGlide i think. But then you would get the discolored cutscene problem.

Did this work for you? I can only pick Windowed or Glide/Direct3D hardware, the latter causing psychedelic colors, but neither disables the bilinear filter. Is there a way to run this full screen without the filtering?

Also, do you know which other bugs are fixed by the GOG launcher? If it's things like taskkilling explorer, setting core affinity and forcing nglide we could add these to software mode ourselves.

Curses! That's literally all it takes to get the game looking just swell. No Bilinear Filtering and it looks exactly as I remember it. Only, now the cutscenes are borked. Fortunately, it hasn't seemed to permanently frox them up for me, so I can switch back and forth, but it's hardly ideal.

This bears closer examination. Like, is there some setting in nGlide doing this or the GOG launcher itself? I'm gonna have to dig deeper, because I'd like to keep playing this classic as I remember it, and not as the gods of ye olde 3D video cards thought it should look...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction everyone, but my hunt for success is not over yet! :)
I have the game working pretty well with Direct 3D (HW Accelerated), changed in olcfg.exe. The advanced settings has them all selected except the first two: Smooth out close-up textures & Smooth out faraway textures, and Render everything in one pass.

My only issue is rainbow colors/black screen flashes at the main menu. All other issues, (aside from the music not playing after going to the menu not resuming), are not present.

Another thing I did was overwrite the nglide files with the latest version from the Zeus Software website, but I wouldn't think that'd have any bearing on Direct 3D mode.
Ah, I initially overlooked the advanced settings button. Anyway, whichever settings I choose, in the first level, when walking on the porch of the large house, the screen isn't cleared correctly, painting an 'endless tunnel' effect on the screen. Anyone else have this?

edit: D3D mode, 1600x1200.

And the videos work without coloring banding issues? On Windows 7?

I'm on Windows 8.1. NVIDIA GPU with the latest drivers.

No color banding. Direct 3D (HW Accelerated) set to 1920x1440, with the above options. I also fixed the menu flashing black by dropping this DirectDraw fix into the game folder. It "turns off" some HW acceleration, according to a status message the game gives at the upper left, but it looks just the same to me. It also makes the game's FPS rise quite a bit.

That fix helped with some framerate jerkiness I had in DD mode, so thanks for that! Unfortunately, I still have color banding issues with the movies, and to a lesser extent the menus.

I'm running Windows 7 and latest Nvidia drivers.

I tried running in 256 color mode and it helped a tiny bit in the intro movie, but as soon as the frame changed the colors were in hideous disarray. No other basic compatibility modes worked, as using them automatically used the nGlide version of the game.

I'm sure there's a way for me to beat this, and I don't intend to surrender to it so easily.

Thanks for the help so far, everyone!

You get rid of those by killing/freezing explorer exe. Freezing explorer.exe is how GOG does it anyway. You can apparently do it via a batch file using the the pssuspend command, the same command also resumes the process if called again.

More information here.

There's also the registry fix for rainbow colors, I actually apllied it to my retail version a while ago but I'm not sure it fully eliminated the color corruption (so that the corrupt colors wouldn't even flash for second). Just in case, I just exported my registry data for it, you can download the reg file here. Feel free to try it.

Edit: The DirectDraw application ID for the GOG version is a different one than for the original game, that's why the reg file above has no effect on it. HERE is a link to a reg file for the GOG executable. It mostly works for me, only the intro seems to have corrupted colors in my case (not the later cutscenes, however). Should be more convenient than killing/freezing explorer.exe.

You can open the olconfig.exe and click advanced with 3DFX glide enabled and turn off both the "smooth texture" options and it will look like software.

Perfect! This solved my dilemma. I ran Pssuspend from the command prompt and loaded olwin.exe the same way and it worked smoothly, with the picture perfect visuals and colorful cutscenes I so strenuously demanded.

Thank you, F4LL0UT, you are a giant among men.
