Almost all the files have already been extracted. There are 2 editors for modding the DBF files [ships, weapons freighters] DBF EXPLORER and DBF PLUS, I just forgot which one I used.
Some original tutorials I screenshotted back then are here also.
Most important is a screenshot called Res extraction - Strategy First Forums.
This will tell you how to unpack and pack the RES files that contain the images of all the ships if you chose to change them and are command line based and the program to pack and unpack them is here also.
The DBF editors though have their own GUI so no messing with command line.
There is even a POD tool for creating your own space backgrounds but I never got to learn this but intend to.

I also have the original English ORB-Patch-1.00_to_1.04_USA that updates the game so if you need this I suggest asking me for it because you can't find it anywhere.
