jo, update in 2020, Zoa has released far more recent than this SDL loader his own thing. It's here:

The game seems to work for me right after I installed it. However reading about this patch it sounds better than simple Direct Draw so I tried it but no matter the setting it either freezes or crashes.

Here when I copied the files on my Nox folder, it couldn't launch anymore :/
I needed to uninstall / reinstall : /

Thanks, this is what got it running on WIndows 10 for me. All the other workarounds didn't seem to do much, at best I could get to the character creation screen but then crashed.

This patch fixes it all - and even has a custom frontend, very nice!

I just got a Library notification from GOG that Nox has received an update. Could it refer to this?

No, it's a Mac only update that does the following;

We've updated the Mac Nox to be compatible with Mac OS X 10.11 (El Capitan)
This update means that disabling the System Integrity Protection feature is no longer required.
