Playing on creative mode I wanted to see what would happen if I tried to drill straight down indefinitely. Would I eventually drill through to the surface on the other side of the planet I was on?

No.

I only got down about four or five stories and hit a stone floor that you could not drill through or manipulate in any way.

The nerd side of me was disappointed with this result.

Has anyone been able to walk around a planet and verify that they are actually giant spheres?
i multiple times flew around planets to see more of their surface and to reach things on other side of planets and yes they are spheres . are you one of that batshit crazy flat-earth'ers?

The layer that looks like sand is impenetrable. Which is weird if you're on the beach and need to dig a hidey hole to wait out a nasty storm.

It is (or at least, was) possible to fall through the surface when mining too deeply. Sometimes a deep mine manipulates the surface tesselation in such a way that you end up on the wrong side, inside the planet.

LOL no!
Just wondered if the mechanics of the program were actually placing the player in a separate 3D enviroment during the transition from space to the planet surface.
and where would that transition be, cause i can see space station from planet
