Sorry if this has been asked before but I just started NMS and I've noticed that when I enter a planet's atmosphere I get this weird blocky graphics as the planet generates, I'm not sure if this is normal because in all the youtube videos I've seen I haven't noticed such a thing. Here's a couple of screenshots of what I'm seeing. It seems to do the same on all planets.

Yes, it is more or less normal. There seems to be a menu of planet views as seen from a distance that correspond to the approximate appearance of the generated planet. Depending on your apparent approach speed, height and angle to the terrain, and the speed of your CPU and GPU the transition from the generic surface to the specific generated surface can sometimes be very obvious, as you have noted.

To kind of move this into the spirit of the game, I imagine that "real" starships wouldn't have transparent cockpit windows. Rather, the pilot would get a "virtual reality" projection (which also explains how the (?) and other icons appear). The ship's scanners create the virtual view as it approaches the planet and prioritizes generating terrain features that are closer to the ship. So, the blocky graphics are, in that sense, the "real life" behavior in the imaginary universe.

Man, that's too deep for a Saturday morning! ;-)
I kinda expected that it was normal. It's a rather jarring effect but I guess the only time you see it is if you orbit a planet's higher atmosphere and only once when it loads. I suppose I can live with that. Thanks for your reply!
