Ship combat is not enjoyable whatsoever. Any space battle is a slog where the NPC out maneuvers you, aimbots you, and heals their shield within a second of you not shooting at them. Add the fact that flying spaceships is already very sluggish and unprecise, the experience is left unenjoyable- especially when there are multiple enemies. The only way to ensure success is to carry pretty much every item you could need to recharge your shields and of course hold down the 's' key so you can actually hit something. The 's' key gives the player their own aimbot- its much worse slower than the NPC's and is much less accurate. I understand the game expects me to max out my ship and simply out dmg everyone, but that is not a fun experience. I'd like to see space combat be more comparable to the StarFox games. A very Arcady playstyle which would be perfect for this casual game. It would be a major improvement over the 'gameplay' we have now.

I'm not sure of your difficulty settings, but in my experience on normal, taking on multiple enemies is super easy with just the basic unupgraded photon cannon and missiles, using the lock-on aiming. Cannon to melt the shields and missiles to finish them off, even against 3 or 4 enemies at once, I rarely have to recharge my shields.

The ship type might also make a difference, I've only ever used fighters though.
On C grade all ships are pretty much the same.

An S grade figther of course, as the name says, is the best at combat.

Last time I played the best ship in NMS was still the first wave exotic though. Once you found such a first wave, you could farm it until you had great stats all over the board.

After that you have a ship that has both great defense and great offense. And doesnt have problematic shortcomings like having to farm exotic stuff to run it.

Its my understanding that exotics now have less maximum inventory space than any other ship type, but its not much of a difference.
