Something else to think about is to verify game files.

If using Galaxy, just click one the button with the two sliders that is just to the right of Play (or Update). then click on Manage Installation and then click on Verify/Repair.

Did this, also a complete reinstall, same issue. but now its downloading a 18Gig Update, hopefully this will fix it

Hope that the reinstall works but if not you might also want to check your antivirus logs, quarantine, etc. Some Steam users are reporting problems with antivirus blocking the nms.exe file (especially with Avast) and one other file whose name I cannot recall. This sometimes happens and has happened to me in ancient days of yore. The OS has also sometimes given me warnings about files that are too new to be trusted.

Good Luck
Just saw a note on Steam - there was a fix in about this but this fix did not make it into today's release of the 5.6.1 patch.

GOG players are no longer worthy of participating in 3xperimental so we do not know of this might have fixed the problem that you experienced.
GoG is reporting that "You're offline. Some parts of the application may be unavailable. Connect now" which seems to be preventing any update to 5.6.x for me. I'm stuck on Worlds Part 2.

There's no update available for me and If I try to verify /repair the installation, I get an "Update Failed E3 Failed to connect to GOG servers".

I checked my firewall and AV logs and no NMS or GOG restrictions exist or are being shown in logs. I have even disabled my AV and Firewall but the issue persists. Everything else seems fine - network comms are good.

Any advice? Is this something to do with GOG comms from the UK or is there something else to consider? Can I grab the update executable or trigger the download from within the binaries (doesn't seem so). Is there a GOG update server I can ping to double-check the comms status from here?

Servers from both GOG and Hello Games are needed and at least right now the GOG servers are down. I can tell because when I open Galaxy the is a note in the lower right that says "it looks like we were unable to connect to the service at this time."

The discovery servers on the Hello Games side are frequently overloaded, especially after a new version is released which attracts an excessive number of button mashers. You can see this with the spinning wheels at early screens or in the lower left corner of the Discoveries tab when in game. Right now the discovery servers are accessible. When these are down everything will show as not having been discovered yet and some other things do not appear such as the daily missions at the console in the Nexus.

Looks like I'll just have to sit it out until the servers work out their issues and the stars align once more.
Meanwhile, I have removed and reinstalled the GOG client - it distracted me for a few minutes at least.
I'm beginning to wish I'd bought NMS on Steam nowadays - damn my principles and overwhelming urge to support GoG - sometimes you're hard to love....

7:42 PM UTC (about 3 hours after your post) and just looked and the GOG servers are back. May have been down for update, maintenance, minor glitch, etc.

Thanks for this, appreciated.

Installed the 5.61 patch, no change still crashes during loading. Error code 141040_0x12F58_GX51883692617914979. Reported to Zendesk. I'll give verifying a go.

Thanks for the advice, verfied files today, NMS now loads and runs.
I've tried reinstalling the game and verifying game files and still crashes on startup.
There is a new patch that has been released and patch notes state: Fixed a number of crashes.

Can't say that this fixes anyone's specific problem but it offers some hope.

This patch, to 5.62, is still awaiting release on GOG.
