I've been looking to purchase this game for a while now and now that it's on sale both here as well as on Steam, I finally have my chance to buy the game. However, I'm not too sure where to buy the game.

I would like to purchase NMS here, but I'm worried that I'll be cut off from the Steam players when it comes to crossplay.

My question is, does the GOG version of NMS have crossplay support with the Steam version? And I am fully aware that in order to use multiplayer on the GOG version, I will have to use GOG Galaxy. I have no issue with that.

Yes there is crossplay between GOG and Steam.
You just need to add them as friends in game.

Edit:
What you might have to keep in mind is: The updates for GOG sometimes take a bit longer to be released than on steam. So if you're friends on Steam get an update, it might be that you can't play with them until you get the update on Gog, too. Mostly this is just a few hours -> few days thing, but sometimes it takes longer.
