I bought NMS when it was on sale two years ago, but never touched it for "reasons". Anyway, with all the hype around this new upgrade, I finally decided it's time to try it.

Installed the game on my Windows 10. Specs:
AMD Phenom II X6 1090T processor - 3.20 GHz
RAM: 20 GB
Graphics card: Nvidia GeForce GTX 750 TI

I started the game, and it informed me right away that the graphics drivers were out of date, so I installed GeForce Experience and updated to version 431.60, plus game optimization.

This time, I get the NMS menu that tells me I can play the game, join a multiplayer game or quit.

So I pick play the game, and the top choice. The screen goes black for 3 seconds, then vanishes and I'm back at the desktop.

Based on the forum posts here, I uninstalled NMS and deleted all game data (I have none I would like to save anyway, since I never played it yet).

Rebooted the computer.

Reinstalled the game.

Went into GeForce Experience, see screenshot attached. Clicked "Optimize settings", nothing happens.

Tried the game, still crashes.

Rinse, repeat several of the steps above, but... needless to say... I can't get in.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be, or better still, can anyone offer a solution? Help is greatly appreciated :)

That graphics card is really on the edge of the minimum specs. Looking at NMS specs minimum is a HD6970 which is slightly better than what you have. And that`s aterribly old graphics card by computer standards.

Also 20 gig ram? That`s an unusual number. It`s 4,8, 16, 32. I suppose you might have a 16 gig and a 4 gig, but that would be really unusual and not great.

Personally I think you need a better graphics card. Better graphics cards are quite cheap. Also find out exactly what ram you have. Processors pretty weak too.

That said, I suspect you`re on a laptop which means you`ll need a new pc. Desktops are always better as laptops for the same spec are always way more expensive and easier to change parts.

The only other option I can think of is to go intpo your Nvidia Control panel and reduce all your settings to low and switch off stuff like AA and AF, that might help. But that`s really a desperate move. Also looking at your pc it seems you have gone as low as possible.

I really think you`re pc or laptop is just too low spec of what was required 2 years ago, but now you need more.

Perhaps someone else has a better solution?

My guess is that she's trying to run it on a laptop due to the jpg attachment. That screen resolution is the biggest clue.

You might be able to get NMS to run on your rig, but I'm not sure how well it will run. One thing you need to do is make sure that you don't have a conflict with your video. Often times laptops will have onboard video as well as the video card. That can cause problems with games. Go in to your settings and make sure the onboard video card is disabled.

As Socratatus mentioned, turn down all the graphics and video options to low and see if you can get it to run. Then, start raising things up a notch, one by one. Leave AA and HBAO off until the last...

You may also want to try checking the NMS forums on Reddit. There is some good info there for troubleshooting, but it's not always the friendliest place to visit...

There is also the support ticket submission on www.nomanssky.com, but that is pretty slow... Select "Unable to Play" and perhaps you might get a faster response. Just remember, HG is a small company, so it may take some time to get a reply.

Good luck!
Try going to folder no man's sky/binaries/settings and edit the file called TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML
Set fullscreen to false and borderless to false.
Change resolutionwidth and resolutionheight to match your desktop.

Maybe play around with some of the other settings in this file if that doesnt work.

You could also delete the file and I would expect the program with create a fresh default one. Not certain about that tho.
Thanks for the replies, guys :) First of all, no, it's not a laptop, but a desktop my husband put together from scratch. It's true that it's not the latest and greatest now, but he recently upgraded the RAM. I think it's got 8+8+4Gb, which would explain the odd size.

The problem is that I can't edit the video settings for the game (I assume that is what you meant, Velgor?)

@vladesh, I did as you said but unfortunately, the same thing happens... the game crashes. I know the settings took because instead of full screen, I now see a bar across the top that indicates it's no longer full screen. I didn't need to change the resolution since that was already set to 1920x1080.

I guess the only thing to do now is get a new graphics card. Anything you guys recommend that is good enough and affordable enough to be able to eat the rest of the month? :D

Again, thanks!

Edit; I just looked it up, the computer was put together in 2011... I guess that is sort of ancient in digiland, right?

Sophia: The problem is that I can't edit the video settings for the game (I assume that is what you meant, Velgor?)
If the problem is you are not getting into the game to edit the settings then you always have the option of editing the settings in the config file, located in your [Game Dir]\Binaries\SETTINGS\TKGRAPHICSSETTINGS.MXML
Just use a standard text editor (Visual studio Code) is a pretty good one, makes xml and stuff easy to read.

To edit the graphics details property here are the options that you have.

// values are in order of strength Low->Enhanced->Hight->Ultra

<Property name="GraphicsDetail" value="TkGraphicsDetailPreset.xml">
//If you want to set the property to ENHANCED settings
<Property name="TextureQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml" />
//If you want to set the property to STANDARD setting
<Property name="ShadowQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
//If you want to sett he property to HIGH setting
<Property name="PostProcessingEffects" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="High" />
</Property>
//If you want to set the property to ULTRA setting
<Property name="VolumetricsQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Ultra" />
</Property>
</Property>

Here is it if you want everything in the low settings just changed out the (GraphicsDetail) object

<Property name="GraphicsDetail" value="TkGraphicsDetailPreset.xml">
<Property name="TextureQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="AnimationQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="ShadowQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="PostProcessingEffects" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="VolumetricsQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="TerrainTessellation" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="PlanetQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml">
<Property name="GraphicDetail" value="Low" />
</Property>
<Property name="BaseQuality" value="TkGraphicsDetailTypes.xml" />
<Property name="AnisotropyLevel" value="1" />
<Property name="AntiAliasing" value="None" />
</Property>

Make sure your motherboard supports whatever you intend to buy, i.e that it has the correct slot on it for the new card!

Thanks... I just found the original complete specs:

- ASUS M4A89GTD PRO/USB3 AM3 AMD 890GX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 HDMI ATX AMD Motherboard
- AMD Phenom II X6 1090T Black Edition Thuban 3.2GHz Socket AM3 125W Six-Core Desktop Processor
- CORSAIR XMS3 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600

Well as I said the RAM was upgraded to 20GB recently - I guess he plugged in additional memory but he doesn't remember now exactly what he did.

The best thing to do might be to get a new motherboard + graphics card + DDR4 memory all at once.... anyway thanks so much for all your help everybody, really really appreciate your help today!!!

Edit; haha we seemed to have been cross posting again :D Yes, I used Notepad++ to edit the file... but unfortunately even with those very basic settings it won't boot even then!

novumZ: Save your money.
Do you mean get a new system altogether?

Yeah, I would look into finding a gaming package, you can probably get a decent offer on a gaming tower with most things in there, something decent not to high priced that should last you for some time. :)

I meant to say in the climate were in; its best to not spend money at the moment on pc hardware.

Well I already have a beautiful fancy case, I don't think that needs to be replaced. Plus an SSD drive and extra hard drive and Bluray player and power supply. Plus a husband who can handle a screwdriver ^_^

We're going to sit on the idea for a few weeks, but I'll make absolutely sure to come back here and update you guys on what we decided... and suggestions are always welcome of course!!!

Eeps, cross posting again! Thanks novumZ, I'll definitely keep that in mind as well... but that said I'm not sure what climate we ARE in haha (not kept up to date with hardware really). What would be a good time to consider upgrading?

When the prices come down, at the moment the tariffs on Chinese-made tech are passed on to us.
Personally I upgraded my PC last year to latest AMD Ryzen 1700 CPU/16G RAM/GTX 1080Ti needed a new case and power supply too....

You dont really know how long the tarrifs are going to go on for in the US so it may be best to get what you can now...the next tarrif increas is still 01 Sep 2019?? Assuming PC stuff is in that??

Also check out the new RTX Super cards available... lol the Nvidia RTX cards came out about two weeks after I bought the 1080Ti....FYI Nvidia fan here...

Also I would check the motherboards manual for what config the RAM has to be and which slots to use... eg 8 Gb only one , 16GB with two...32 GB one/two/four etc...I have put a couple of PCs together and the way RAM is slotted surprized me...

Laurie
The game works on my GTX 750 Ti (and all other specs of my system much lower than yours...). It's not that 'whohooo'-graphics but I don't experience such crashes.
