This may work on steam, but I did a search for the file that it's supposed to change (GCSPACESHIPGLOBALS.GLOBAL.MBIN) and it does not exist on my hard drive. So I don't think it will work for Gog installs.
Those pictures are from the GOG version.
He mentions that as part of the technical details.
That is where in the unpacked files the changes were made, before being packed into a mod.
All you need is the _MOD.Hytek.LowFlight.pak that is in the download like every other .pak mod. :)
Installation:
1. Drag and drop _MOD.Hytek.LowFlight.PAK into your PCBANKS folder
(for Steam this is located at Program Files (x86) > Steam > steamapps > common > No Man's Sky > GAMEDATA > PCBANKS)
2. That's it! Seriously!

Yeah it did work. Someone said something about farming with your ship. You will never do much, 39 is the slowest you can go, all you can do is take passing shots. But it's nice to a better look at the ground before you land.

I have not seen that the ships guns can damage resources or wildlife or anything for that matter, please correct me if I am wrong and I will gladly give it a go. Had a few good runs on some objects that I was sure would be hits. Made me wonder how the ships cannons can destroy a Iron asteroid but not plant life. :)

True, but a fundamental fix nonetheless
Maybe after some more mods we will get rid off this damn gaming console feeling. The Low Flying Mod is a first step into the right direction. Thanks for the hint...
Now we are talking :) These game improvement mods will be what can save NMS in the long run.

Added to the stickied NMS mods thread (i had come here to post it in there and saw this thread).
Ok, I wanted to wait a month, but this low-flying is something I`ve really wanted. I could tell that if it works it will be truly immersive. Mods do magic work. Thanks.

P.s
Ok tried this mod for a little while.
Much better. Great even.
It`s very good. Being able to fly really low makes a huge difference to my flying enjoyment on world. Being a fly sim gamer as well, it means a lot to me to have this extra control. Boosting at speed and skimming the trees and plains, diving in between canyons is superlative. I even shot straight through the middle of a donut shaped stone formation! Before this mod I would`ve been shoved above it, ruining my fun.

It`s much easier to see a spot and land now because you aren`t being shoved away from scouting an area.

Also, I`m not certain, but I think it`s fixed the zooming into space when you don`t want it bug.

Underwater travel.

The underwater flying is nice, you`re slowed down and you actually hear less of your engines, but you get no water spash effect and the water effect s not on your shiip, but on your visor. It`s clear that ships aren`t ready for submersive stuff. So I stay away from that.

Things to be aware of:

1. You CAN now damage you ship in anything you hit, which is, in my opinion, as it should be. It rewards care and skill. However, you`d have to be truly useless to destroy your ship in one go.

2. Keep your eyes and hands on the controls if zooming from space to planet- You can now destroy yourself if you don`t pull up.

3. There seems to be times when I hit low stuff when I thought I was clear, but I believe it`s just getting used to the shape of your ship. I stopped hitting low things once I figured that out.

The Devs. Slight rant

I can only assume the Devs added this restriction to flying low because they think we`re incompetent children who can`t handle hitting things.

I think this is just the reason that stays behind this decision...

It's pretty clear that being able to use your (waaaaay more powerful?) ship weapons instead of your hand held ones adds a very complicated layer to the mix. It'll probably unbalance all the FPS part of the game. So in the end they weren't able to offer a cohesive solution and just skipped it completely.

[Entering off-topic mode]

In fact, I DO think this is the reason behind the lack of depth all the people are complaining about... It's more easily said than done... BY LIGHT YEARS...

I'm fully sure HG tried more complex mechanics overall, but they ended probably in dead ends, bugs, cross incompatibilities, etc. And remember this is a completely procedure generated HUGE game. So breaking the whole game seems really, really, really, easy by just changing one figure in any of its seeding magic numbers.

HG probably needed HARD-CORE mathematicians rather than code/game designers... And I'm not sure they could have achieved much more.

My only TRUE complaint about NMS is it's clearly not a 60€ game... The Witcher 3 is a 60 € game, this is just a veeeery good indie game which should have had a 30 € price tag...

A very good analysis about how hard (impossible?) making fully cohesive games is. And how much harder it is for a small team. (The Astronauts (the incredible moving "The vanishing of Ethan Carter") talking about the also incredibly good SOMA):

Go and buy both if you haven't done already....

I guess you are more right then you know: one of the PS4 thingies on YouTube >>> player has just entered the game, his wreck of a ship still not touched, and then he is greeted by a small "animal".

First thing she/he does: shoot'em up!!
Must have been a whole lot of fun, considering the almost hysterical laugh.
That much about "incompetent children" and hitting things.

On topic: each to her/his own, but after testing the mod I am back to "autopilot" for several reasons:

- with the autopilot I am able to fly at tree hight, low enough for me because >>
- on each first visit of a planet I am searching for traders with landing pods. As long as these ships move that much sluggish this can not be done without crashing in one or more harder surfaces.

I am glad that using mods is an option only.
Wooohooooo!!!! You gotta love modders!!!!

Will try this tonight but really happy to see this.
I give this mod two thumbs up. If I was an alien and had more thumbs I would give it more thumbs up. ;-)

*shrug* ..those may be reasonable assumptions to make on the face of things. But what does "breaking" the game really mean?

Creating a planet that will murder you instantly?

Making it possible to grind your ship apart on the first mountain you see?

Having cause and effect relations that require you to have visual intelligence on the level of "eraser->writing->blank slate" to proceed?

Putting in anything that will stop your game-progress? Forcing you to retreat to avoid failure?

Anything can be "game-breaking", no? And justify limitations that cut the legs off the central exploration premise - long before the maths of the game produces a planet exclusively made out of spikes you cannot land on, etc.

It's just a very curious argument that it somehow is impossible to create an interesting universe, without baby-proof navigation. It's like saying that unless the game is limited enough to make it boring, it cannot be sold as a boring and limited game. ..you know, it's logical, but it's a curious sales-pitch.

...not that that prevented this pitch from being the direct cause several other Sony productions spiraling down a similar degenerative loop, as it went through the wringer in q&a. But still. Not a very good argument, imo.
