I've just clocked 300 hours of gameplay. I consider myself an intermediate NMS player. Thus far, I'm overseeing one settlement and built two custom bases on planets that I found appealing to me. I also plotted a couple of trade routes and use teleports to hop between them on a needed basis. I do not yet own a freighter however.

Here's my confusion: I don't fully understand the differences between making one's base aboard a freighter versus building one's base as close as possible to one's settlement versus simply building a base on a planet that strikes one's fancy (which is what I've been doing thus far). Can anyone help shed light on the advantages or disadvantages of these scenarios?

Until then, happy space exploration! :)

One thing which you can do on a planet which you can not do with a freighter base is to build exocraft geobays. Having an orbital exocraft materializer in your freighter is really handy as it allows you to summon an exocraft whenever your freighter is in-system. However, only exocraft with geobays can be summoned. If you craft a geobay to summon the exocraft and then delete the geobay then the exocraft remains but it can't be summoned with the freighter.

You do not need a base to craft geobays but you may want to revisit them at some point so building them at a base or near your settlement is recommended.

Even a simple planet-side base is someplace that you can always return to. That's also true of space stations but you'll likely visit many more stations than you will have bases.

Pretty much all of the other "mod cons" are available in or can be built as part of a freighter base. Plus, you won't be complaining about the lighting!

Bare with me as I try to grasp what you are explaining... xD

In short, you are saying that an advantage of having a freighter is that it can be summoned within the system you are currently in, allowing you to easily summon an exocraft from any planet you are currently on (within that same system), provided there's an orbital exocraft materializer aboard said freighter? Did I catch that correctly?

In relation to my main question, would you say that your home base is aboard a freighter? A planet? A settlement? (And why?)

By the way, thanks for your feedback. :)
That plus having a freighter in-system also gives you access to the contents of all ten storage units (needs a Matter Beam installed on the freighter). With a Matter Beam but not in-system you can access the freighter's own main storage and tech slots.

My usual setup is to have one pretty simple planet side "main" base in or near the starting system and then a smaller one to anchor any galaxy I visit. The main base is a handy place for refiners, a nutrient processor, and a trade terminal as well as a place to get in out of the weather. Pic attached. Nothing fancy.

My freighters usually have only the ten storage units plus the matter beam and orbital exocraft materializer widget. Typically also add a teleporter (handy if visiting undiscovered systems) and a trade terminal. And frigate control rooms, of course.

Lots of people do live out of their freighters, though. AIUI there is room to build up an additional 14 level from the main deck. So lots of space, no sentinels sniffing around, and no carnivors leaving the remains of their meals outside the door.

Are you saying I that I can access all ten storage units without leaving the planet and flying up to my freighter (with the Matter Beam installed, of course)? If that's true, then that alone is a big advantage to owning a freighter, I think. :D So, basically, I can keep doing what I do, which is build bases on planets that I fancy and use a freighter as a mobile storage unit that I simply summon at will? As of now, I've got all my ten storage units stashed in my 2nd base, which I teleport to when I need to empty my inventory slots. But it gets a bit tedious when I want to teleport back to where I came from. But with the freighter, the storage units come to me? That is awesome! I see the freighter's usefulness now. ;)

You've been most helpful, dashiichi! Thanks!

OMG! I just checked out your profile... 5200+ hours playing NMS!? I just went from feeling like an intermediate player to a complete newbie! xD
