How did you guys handle preparing your troops? I'm in Act III and it just occured to me that I should have hired with the lowest standards as soon as I got the keep and then trained them to be the best of the best once I got Light of Heavens as my Sergeant. Currently got maxed out equipment for them but still have very few trainees, so glad I'm not on a time restriction to finish the main quest so going to raise my troop counts.

I've played through this part of the game with a variety of different approaches, and it makes a lot less difference than you might think. In one playthrough I intentionally left everything unupgraded (misappropriating all the keep's funds for my own use) and found the battle perfectly manageable. Comparing my average completion playthrough to my full completion playthrough, I don't recall even noticing a difference.
Went through the game again and you're right. I thought it would make the stand easier but my character was pretty high level by the time I got there and did much of the work either way.
