it crashs after i press play on the menu before it goes full screen any help would be aprecated

Go to NWN folder and run game directly from nwmain.exe.

And be sure to set up your compatibility mode stuff on nwmain.exe

You should be able to run the toolset from the main menu without any problems if you should want to build your own little game with it.
