Hello there and welcome to the forum.

First of all, Im completely new to d/d rules so I want to apologize straight away for possible noob questions.
Started playing NWN2 recently. As far as I understood they way character levels up - best thing to do is to multiclass in order to get the maximum benefit for your character and to make it more flexible. So started playing as a rogue and had an idea to combine it with fighter. My question is : Do I need to pick fighter class when levelling up only at specific levels or it won`t make any difference at all? I would presume the answer is YES because a rogue gets his sneak attack bonus only at certain levels so that would be when I level up as rogue?? PLEASE correct me if Im wrong. For now Im level 7 and ready to advance to the next one, already managed to pick Shadowdancer for HIPS, my sneak attack is +4D6, my attack bonus is +15. Also, when to pick the two weapon feat, in order to use it to its full benefit? Currently my DEX is 22.

Thanks in advance for any help on above.

I'll try to answer your questions by saying what I remember.

1. You don't really need to multiclass in order to be flexible or to have maximum benefit. Especially for classes like Mages, multiclassing is generally considered a bad idea since it will decrease your effective mage level. I generally never multiclass in a D&D 3.5 game.

2. Some feats require some base levels.

For example, the Whirlwind Attack requires a Base attack of 4. So while planning a Fighter/Thief, it might be required to get some fighter levels later. It may also change depending on which epic features or prestige classes you want to take. Other than that, it doesn't really matter.

3. There are usually 2 types of play as far as I see. You can play casually, without really thinking forward and pick what you feel like as you progress, or you can plan ahead, learn the typical level you'll be when you reach the final parts of the game and plan your every move (feat, skills, etc.) You can do so by yourself by checking the links I've provided or you can simply ask (or google) for recommendations. Just try to not get lost in it since D&D3.5 has almost limitless possibilities.

EDIT: For some reason, GOG keeps messing with my links.

I rarely multi-class with base classes unless I need to grab a level in something to become eligible for a prestige class or just to grab access to some feats or abilities on the cheap. For instance, a single level of fighter will get your rogue use of all armor and a lot more weapons. Another thing to consider is to build toward a prestige class that continues your base class, for instance, in your case, that could be Shadow Thief of Amn.
Thank you guys for your replies.

Im at the beginning of chapter 2 at the moment and made some progress getting to know how the game mechanics and character development work. Like the unclejoe mentioned above, I think its defo worth considering taking one level of different class in order to get your character more flexible. Anyway, I will keep gathering info simply by playing :)

Regards.
