After going through all the title screens, the screen goes black. I can click the mouse and here the selects and music. When I alt tab nothing changes, but when I Ctrl+ALt+Del it freezes the screen out. Can anyone point me towards a fix?

Have you tried updating your computer's video card drivers? If that doesn't work, try setting the compatibility to WIndows XP SP2 or 3 (I have my game's compatibility set to Windows XP SP3, but for some SP2 works, so try one or the other). If you still encounter problems, post more information about your system, particulary the video card your computer uses.

From what I've tested on a few days with my own (and with my brothers) computer the problem is simply your graphics card that is for what ever reason NWN1 absolutely hates radeon cards and works like a charm with Nvidia.

It's because NWN was created with 'hacky' non-standard OpenGL, and ATI/Radeon drivers just fall over. Some of the most common pieces of advice for ATI users is to disable shiny water, disable edge-detect antialiasing, and experiment with lower settings in CCC.
