I installed NWN2 on my System yesterday, and after a lot of trouble to get it running I now have the problem that the game is completly mute. No music, no sound effects, nothing the game just stays mute even when I set all my sound options to max.

I'm running the game on win7 x64 sp1 system and so far I never had any sound problems with any of the other games.

what I did so far:
-make sure that in nwn.ini the DisableSound is set to 0
-try different Speaker Type in nwn.ini
-both the enable EAX and enable hardware checkboxes in the Audio options --> EAX SSettings can't be checked

As I mentioned above I had problems to get the game running at all, which I only solved be replacing the mss32.dll
from nwn2 with the one from nwn1. Don't know if that could be part of the problem
There's no guarantee that the mss32 (the sound framework NWN2 uses) is compatible with the one from NWN1 so I would certainly say that you're in completely uncharted waters in that configuration.

What was happening with the stock game files in use? It shouldn't be necessary (or advisable) to swap out mss32.dll.

Uninstall the game completely and reinstall OUTSIDE of 'Program Files'. Mss32.dll is part of Bink tools, and your problems may have been because you installed inside the protected Program Files folder structure. Also, you cannot enable EAX in Windows 7 without Creative Alchemy being installed.
Well I was simply not able to start the game.
Whenever I tried, the game would immediatly throw me back out to the desktop without giving me any error messages.
I tried several suggestions in another forum, of which none worked until someone suggested to exchange the mss.32 , which actually allowed me to start the game and go all the way through the intro, start page and character creation without any problems, except for the complete lack of any sound.

I actually already tried installing it outside of the Program Files.

What I already tried before exchanging the mss32.dll:

-Installing Direct X V9
-setting compatibility for nwmain.exe to Win XP SP3
-starting as Administrator
-renaming nwmain.exe
-Installing tha game directly in C: instead of the GOG file.
-changing the setting in the nwn2.ini [Display Options] to FullScreen=1 Width=1920 Height=1080
-and installing the CEP V2.4 as some here have recommended

Uninstall the game; completely delete your ..\Documents\Neverwinter Nights 2\ folder; reinstall the game. I run NWN2 on Windows 7 64 bit, and there is no issue with it whatsoever, provided that the game is installed OUTSIDE of Program Files. somewhere like C:\Games\ .

You absolutely CANNOT do this!

No, you absolutely never install community content of any kind while troubleshooting. Get the game working first.

Ok I tried reinstalling the game again
installing it in C:\GOG Games did not work and just produced the already mentioned problem.

hovewer installing the game in:
C:\Users\username\Documents\My Games\
actually worked, and the game is now running properly with sound.

Thanks for the help :)

yeah the mss in mss32.dll stands for miles sound system. which is the software audio engine used if you don't have hardware designed to work on the proprietary stuff. this worked for KOTOR 2 but I guess NWN2 is just too different. if the sound didn't work when you changed the dll then it's likely that you needed the new one.

sounds like a file directory permissions thing. in the future, if you have trouble like this, check your windows Event Viewer logs to see if it's throwing up any warnings. maybe something you've enabled in windows is blocking access to anything under C:\, or perhaps any antivirus software you're running. the default GOG Games\ directory shouldn't be causing any troubles that something under My Documents\Games should fix. glad you got the game working though.
