I am searching for 1 day and I couldnt find a way to change animal companion. In Neverwinter Nights 1 you were given an option to change animal companion and its name when you level up. You dont get that option in NWN2. I had selected Wolf as companion but now I want to change it to Bear.

Also a side question, do you think Wolf's "knowdown" ability gets useless in later levels?

Thank you.
Engin.

Note: I will only select "solution" for the first question.

I found a Character Editor here. It lets you change your companion and its name among other things.

I think the only in game way is to take levels in another class that has a companion and change it then.

The easier way is to edit your saved game with a GFF Editor
Edit the playerlist.ifo and change companion type to 2 See Pic

Beside what olnorton said, there is also a feat you can take that specifically grant you a dinosaur instead of your normal animal companion
Thank you guys. After intense searching for almost 2 days I realized it is not possible. I am selecting Olnorton's answer as solution and +1 for Gummiel.

What about the knockdown ability of the Wolf? I keep reading that it is becoming useless in later levels. I think I am not changing it because I love wolves. I had 2 wolves (real wolves) in real life. They are amazing animals with great personality.
Now let me start this by saying i haven't actually used a wolf to high lvl, but also a lot of ppl like to claim something as useless, as soon as it is only the 2nd best, and not the best thing to use, but still entirely viable (this really count for about any game.

That said even if the wolf should have some limits in high lvl play (which i can see some of it, like it end up with a 19 str, decent but not as high as you might like since knockdown is a str check for the attacker), but as a druid you ahve access to a lots of spells to enhance your companion, there is the obvious bull's str than can be cast on any friendly target, so use that to make a better chance to get it to knockdown its target, beside that you get the Awaken spell as well which give a permenent +4 str as long as it is summouned as well (even if you after you cast it, unprepare the spell for the next time you rest). Those 2 together is a lot of extra str to get a higher chance for the knockdown to succeed.
Another issue that could be there is that the str check of knockdown is modified by the creature size, cant find any info about a wolf size sadly it seem, but if it is classified as a small creature this could be an issue though, that you cant really do anything about (enlarge spell sadly dont really change the technical size of a target)

Been trying to find a new character to make for a while, and you kinda make me want to try a druid now :D
