I have read every single post I could find on "NWN not working with Vista" on this webpage and through search engines. I've read dozens of pages. I am running NWN on Vista and what happens: When I go to start the program,
I get a black screen like it's loading the game and then and error message that says "Neverwinter Nights has stopped working". Ok so here is what I have done:

1. Updated video and sound drivers.
2. Updated windows drivers
3. Made sure patch was updated to version 1.69
4. uninstalled and reinstalled
5. Right clicked NWN.EXE and NWMAIN.EXE and clicked compatibily mode run with windows XP SP2,
Changed permissions to Full permissions. Checked run as administrator.
6. Updated windows drivers
7. Restarted computer

These are the solutions I have found that have worked for the majority of people. I am at a loss. Don't know
what else to do. Any help would be tremendously appreciated. I put in a ticket with gog.com

Here are some ideas that MIGHT help, I don't promise anything.

Did you install to Program Files? Don't.
Did you try compatibility mode for all versions, not just XP SP2?
Did you disable the three display options?
Did you try adjusting the resolution or other settings with NWCONFIG?
Do you have custom graphics card settings that might somehow be interfering?
I assume you've scanned the net for articles about getting NWN to run on Vista?
You have Direct X installed?
A quick web search suggests trying to set CPU affinity.

Which exe do you use to launch the game? Try to avoid the splash screen, launching the game from the "nwnmain.exe" file in the game folder.

I have tried using all the .exe files to launch the game. None of them are working.

I've found, of all things, that it was the opening cinematics that were crashing the game for me. I fixed this problem by deleting the following files from the "movies" folder of the installation:

AtariLogo.bik
BiowareLog.bik
fge_logo_black.bik
NWNintro.bik
WOTCLogo.bik

Don't know if you're having the same issue, but that's the problem I was having.

Should only need to have compatibility mode set for nwmain.exe
Windows XP (Service Pack 2) or 3 worked for me, also set disable visual themes, disable desktop composition, and lastly you may have to disable display scaling on high DPI settings
run as admin
all found on the compatibility properties tab

You may have tried these settings already.

What worked for me was to rename "NWMAIN.EXE" to something else,
like nwngame.exe and then launch the game using the renamed exe.

Wow... that did it. I renamed NWMAIN.EXE to Neverwinter.exe and it works now. Thank you so much. You guys were far more helpful than the GoG.com support staff. Thank you everyone for the information.
