Hello fellow Neverwinter Night fans,

I had a little trouble slaying a Death Slaad Lord. I was wearing the "Greater Belt of Guiding Light" which gives Immunity to Death Magic. Or so it says. Whatever I did it still slayed me saying Fortitude Save vs Death: Failure and some dice roll and instant death. I tried a couple of times and then finally slayed the beast by boosting my Fortitude by rings and Necklaces but i am disappointed that the belt didnt work. Or am I understanding it wrong here? Immunities to Poison, knockdown or ability drain work just fine.

Tnx.

Do you remember which ability the Death Slaad Lord was using? Because I'm pretty sure the belt works as intended.

You see, the Slaad has a number of instant-death effect spells, and confusingly enough only some of them count as "death magic."

Specifically, if he used Implosion (medium yellow swirly graphic and sucking noise) you get a Fortitude Save vs. Death, but the belt will not protect you. The logic is that this spell kills you by crushing you into a tiny ball of blood, rather than through dark necromancy or something.

If the Slaad was using something like Finger of Death or Circle of Death, the belt -should- have protected you and you encountered a bug. But I very much doubt it. These things work pretty well in NWN.

As for the Implosion spell: it's a pain in the backside, that's for sure. As far as I know, nothing will protect against it except Spell Mantles and the like. If you can cast that spell, through a scroll with Use Magic Device or by being a wizard, this would be the time to use it. Otherwise, just try and stop the thing from casting. Use invisiblity to sneak up and use disabling attacks like Knockdown.

Boosting saves and hoping to get lucky, as you did, also works, but can get frustrating if you get unlucky saving throw rolls. Plus Implosion generally has a pretty difficult save DC.

Good luck!

I am not sure which ability or spell it used because it says something like "Slaad used unknown magic". I only wrote down what I could read.

Strangely, same thing happened while fighting Aribeth. She cast some unknown spell and created a black hole beneath my feet and killed me instantly. Death Magic immunity belt didnt work there. I tried atleast 10 times and then gave up and piled up Fortitute and this time she didnt cast it :). Ah Dear Aribeth. Our children will be smart and beautiful.

Yeah, that's the "medium yellow swirly graphic and sucking noise".

Jarmo: Yeah, that's the "medium yellow swirly graphic and sucking noise".
So is that spells Implossion? In its description it says "While this spell is not death magic (immunity does not apply), the saves are made "versus death".

Yeah, that's the one. Like the description says, immunity does not apply. The "versus death" bit just means that if you find an item that gives "+x Fortitude Versus Death" the bonus will apply against this spell.

See the list of possible strategies I listed in my last post to deal with it. But basically, it's one of those spells that is just sometimes going to kill your character no matter what you do. Again, unless you have access to spell mantle, or if you have amazing saving throws and disable the "automatically fail saves on a roll of 1" option in the .ini file. Otherwise, best defence probably is a good offence.

Of course, the very best "solution" is to play a cleric yourself and start casting this spell at the enemy. Monsters aren't immune either. It's one of the reasons clerics are amazingly strong in this game.

If you really want to see it, you can simply go to the [path]\Neverwinter Nights\movies directory (where [path] is whatever directory you installed the game in) and play the ending.bik file.

A program like MPlayer should be able to run the format. Maybe you need a codec.

Or you could just not bother. It's not that interesting.
Thank you. I watched the ending on youtube. It could be better. "Your adventures will continue?" I was hoping atleast for a tip about Aribeth's fate. Also the final fight was super easy. I didnt even use a potion. Not even a healing potion. She kept throwing fireballs and electric something and my rogue reflexed them. She timestopped a few times yet she couldnt do much. She only killed my henchmen once.
If you have the expansions, you can (eventually) learn of Aribeth's fate there.

Also, there are fan made highly rated modules where Aribeth storyline continues.
Can't remember which are the good ones and which are just porn, or if there's a difference.
