I bought Neverwinter Nights diamond edition on GOG.com on friday and when I launch it ( on windows 7 64 bit) it instantly says "program stopped working" I have played it over this weekend but now suddenly says that it won't work and i have already re-installed it but i keep getting that error, so if anyone can tell me what to do i would really appreciate it.

P.S. I have already search for the problem and everyone says that i have to configure it by right clicking on the icon but i don't get that option just in case anyone suggests that.

I have the same issue. I've configured the game and tested the configuration through nwconfig.exe, but the game keeps on crashing as soon as the first introduction movie launches. I'm also using Win7 64 bit. Any ideas?
Have you disabled UAC (User Account Control) BEFORE installing the game?
I have just found a solution... basically you have to run the game in WinXP SP3 compatibility mode. With that, the game launches successfully. No need to disable UAC, either. Thank you dr.schliemann for answering, though. ^_^

No you don't. I am running under Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit. I do not have UAC disabled, and I have never had to run any game under compatibility mode, and certainly not Neverwinter Nights. The first, and biggest, mistake that people make with games and Windows, is to install it into 'Program Files', which Windows jealously protects from being written to. Always install games outside of the Windows protected 'Program Files' folder structure.
I have the game installed into "C:\GOG Games\Neverwinter Nights", as per the default installation path. So that's not the cause of the issue.

Fair enough, but assuming you have sufficient administrative rights, neither is UAC or compatibility.
So, right click on the game icon (or the executable in your form of file mangler), select properties, and run it in XP compatibility mode. Runs like a top for me, and i'm using Vista.
I've run into a different problem.

The game ran fine until 1 crash occured (win7 x64), then declared itself incompatible entirely and now refuses to start, attempting to start it either does nothing or freezes windows explorer completely.
I have the same problem as Link6746. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling after the crash, just in case there was some file that got damaged, and there was no improvement. Now, I can load nwn.exe, but as soon as I click on any of the launcher menu items, it shuts down. No error message, no log file created, and most importantly, NO GAME. And, as tudhalyas points out, when you use the default installation path that the GOG installer presents, your game will NEVER be installed into "Program Files", so that solution is not applicable. I know NWN was always somewhat unstable, but up until Windows 7, I could at least get it to work. Now? Nothing.

Same thing for me, double click to launch the game...nothing happens.

Perhaps a Java error...is my best guess.
If the UAC is enabled, you'll probably need to make sure every NWN executable is set to run as administrator. In addition to stopping apps from writing to Program Files, I believe the UAC also stops apps from launching other apps, and NWN's main launcher (nwn.exe) runs nwloader.exe, which then loads nwmain.exe (the actual game executable). I had to make sure that, at the very least, both nwn.exe and nwloader.exe ran as admin before the launcher could actually launch the game.

Personally though, I just like to make a shortcut to nwmain.exe so I don't have to deal with the first two.

Also, I don't believe NWN ever installed into the Program Files folder by default. Could be different for me, but I have a disc copy of the Diamond Edition and it always picks the root of my primary hard-drive.

I use win 7 64 as well and I had to set the compatibility to win xp sp3 and run as admin. Now it works fine, though the cut scenes are still choppy sometimes.
