I got Neverwinter Nights during the free GOG Promo and I installed it on both GOG Galaxy and from the installer on the website, but it will not start on any of them. I have tried installing DirectX June 2010 runtime package, changed the name of nwmain.exe, used compatibility settings for Windows XP Service Pack 3 and 2 and used disable visual themes and desktop composition, and I have used nwn.exe and nwloader.exe, but none of these options have worked for me.

If anyone can help with this problem please help.

My PC specs are:
Os: Windows 7 Home Premium Service Pack 1 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i7-3540M 3.00GHz
RAM: 8 GB
GPU: Nvidia GeForce GT 640M

Thank you to anyone that can help :)

I'm having this exact same issue. I got NwN Diamond on Gog today via the free promo, and it keeps giving an error after going to black screen on loading. The error says Runtime error! Abnormal program termination. I've tried many of the steps that this person outlined above, and the error persists still.

Update-
I played around a bit more with compatibility settings among the various .exe files in the install folder, and by running the nwmain.exe, or the shortcut named Launch Neverwinter Nights Diamond Edition that points to the nwmain.exe in it's target field, with high DPI scaling turned off and WinXP SP 2 or 3 for compatibility setting, I am able to load the game and play normally so far. I have the Collector's Edition and Diamond edition of this and they only have a config, loader and main .exe for loading the game. There are quite a few more files with gog designations in this installation of the game than with my other retail copies of the game. I'm not exactly sure why this install has all the extra gog related files in the installation, but I suspect that all has something to do with this being rather twitchy to run.

I had the same problem, did some searching in this forum and found the fix.

Go to where you installed the game.

If you used GOG Galaxy it's

C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\NWN Diamond

Right click nwn.exe

click Properties.

Click Compatibility.

Put a checkmark next to

Run this program in compatibility mode for

Windows XP (Service Pack 2)

AND

put a checkmark next to

Run this program as an administrator.

Click OK and double click nwn.exe.

Enjoy!

I can't even download...this is al fake probably...gog is totaly disaster...no chance that I ever give money for some game on gog, because I don't need this,I'm on steam about 1 year, and never have problems to start and play game...
I found my problem is the same as the one on this post gog.com/forum/neverwinter_nights_series/disc_copy_game_will_not_load and the solution to disable the sound allows the game to run, but I have a realtek HD audio card so I can't play the game with sound. I have tired to use 3d sound back but that does not seem to do anything. If any can help, Thanks!

I installed my copy I got from the give away.

then I followed the posts about how to fix it, which was off a tiny tiny bit, but close enough you should be able to understand it.

it ran so smooth in 1366x768 i had to buy the second one..

the files are fine.

first, right click on the icon on your desktop and select "open file location"
rename the file nwmain.exe to nwnmain.exe
click on Serialtool.exe and enter YOUR keys overwriting the default generic ones and save and exit.
click on nwconfig.exe and set your display size, 1368x768 looks great btw.

I never played this one much, this was a great thing to get for free.
your gonna love it.

then after you do all that, click on the nwnmain.exe you messed with in the first step and create a shortcut to it from your desktop and delete the old one...

ready to go.

get the offline generator later to unlock the premium modules, easy to do.

PS. Im usually the naysayer, tables turned.. :p

Try uninstalling the realtek driver, then reboot and let windows install the default driver.

Did you try the solution I listed above? I can play perfectly fine with sound and I also have a Realtek HD sound card.

OfficialRiderPride I have tried your solution but it does not work and I also tried capricorn1971ad and olnorton solutions but none have worked so far. When I uninstall my realtek driver and reboot windows just reinstalls the same realtek driver and compatibility settings won't work for me.
Thank you for everyones help, but I still can't get it to run with sound.

This is weird, I have a similiar setup, except my GPU is a 750m.

And mine start perfectly. Did you run the setup? Try different resolution/setting, it may worth trying,
Guys had the same problem and solution was stupidly simple!

Just go to the game settings in GOG Galaxy, (More / Other / Settings) and input your screen resolution there.
Simple as that! After that the game works as a charm - no need to rename files, input CD keys, run as admin, etc.

I did try all of the different resolutions including my own but it still will not run, the only way to play is if I disable the sound from the settings. I think I'll just give up since I can't get it to even run. I try again when ever I get a new computer.
Thanks for everybody's help with this, but I think it can't run on this pc with sound for some odd reason.
Thanks again everyone :)
