AngryHatter: NWN was a linear bore. The amount of flexibility was limiting. The voice acting was over the top;embarrassing. The storyline was old and trite - you knew where they story was headed from the get-go.

NWN2 is also linear, however handled far better. The immersion is like night versus day. If you played D&D; this just feels like playing around the table with your friends.

Graphics are similar but the music is another area that was improved. In NWN2, it's dark and cheesy, like watching Dark Sahdows - absolutely perfect.
Totally agree on this one, the only thing I found disappointing in NWN2 was Neverwinter itself. In NWN1 it is a grand city, jewel of the north (if a bit plague ridden :) ), but when you arrive in the docks in NWN2 it is just a load of houses and mud. Then when you proceed to the rest of the city you find the layout has totally changed. It just sort of broke the illusion that this is neverwinter to me.

Frankly, I'm surprised this hasn't popped up yet, but....

If you loved NWN2, I strongly suggest picking up the Baldur's Gate series. D&D mechanics (though definitely not 3.5), a ridiculously amazing story, awesome characters... the only downside is the lack of shiny you'll notice since you're coming from playing NWN2.

NWN1 was the first D&D crpg I played, and I thought it was so much fun. Then I played Baldur's Gate 1 & 2 and found out how much I had been missing.

Just give it a shot.

That being said, if you just wanna try NWN1, go for it. The OC and expansions are nice, but the community-made modules really shine through.

I will totally second this sentiment. While NWN1 has far and away the best multi-player component of any RPG ever, BG and BG2 are the best single player RPG's ever, bar none.

I own all 3 of the first.. have since they came out.. I never could get past a few acts in the first before being totally bored and side tracked to another game. I found it pretty bland when com paired to baldur's gate.

the first was their first attempt into the 3D world, and i think they spent most of their time on that, vrs setting up a decent story, and game play.. I would think the expansions might not have the same issue.. But like i said, the first i found a total bore and it made me not bother with the rest.

I will say, i spent 100's of hours with the campaign creator in the first, and it was a ton of fun to play with. the tools were all their, but to me the game fell short..

I would highly suggest going to BG 1+2, if you have never played.. get past the dated graphics, and fall in love with the 3-D isometric classic
Yes. They both are great for different reasons. The selection of user created modules is mind boggling in NWN 1(A Dance with Rogues! All the awesome PNP classic D&D conversions as well). Camera is much better than NW2 and easier to handle. A lot of people knocked controlling one character with henchman but I actually prefer it. I feel more immersed in my own character and I'm hitting the space bar a lot less to manage other characters.
It's late to answer but I really appreciated the game when it came out, but now I can't play it, because the AI are really bad (even with Tony K mod) mainly with a caster as henchman. For exemple when you summon a creature it waits a little while before attacking (even if you spam the "attacking order button"). I can't understand why developpers insists with friends bots when they can't make a good AI, seriously it's not just more difficult but a lot more frustrating.

And the main campaign is really bad level designed, the story can be good but you spend your liiiiiiiiiiiiiifffffe with pick locks and traps, each of your steps you have to defusing traps and pick locks... You don't know why but there is 10 chests in the street and the half are locked.. If you played NWN2 before, I don't think you will really love NWN1 as players can be love the game when it came out, it has not aged well.

escapist23: I disagree, but we all have opinions. The linearity doesn't bother me, infact I hate games that are too open ended and feel dispersive.

NWN Hotu was very good, I didn't find any embarassing voice acting. Def one of the best RPGs ever made.

I also disagree about the music. In NWN2 it's not improved as both games have amazing quality soundtracks, I have been a musician for 20 years.

Graphics are not similar at all, in NWN2 they look hand-painted, in NWN they are more basic. The music is not 'cheesy' in either game, it's orchestral music made by total pros. I have actually been really impressed by the quality.

Both great games, but for NWN i'd only play Hotu
For official SP campaigns - Hordes is worth the price of admission alone for buying NWN1: Complete, IMHO.

For some of the best RPG expansion-packs ever made, I think BG2: TOB; NWN1: Hordes; and NWN2: Mask are fantastic.
