I'm currently partway through chapter 3 of Hordes of the Underdark. I saved at the beginning of the Windswept Battlefield area; my quicksave is just before that, in the Fortress Courtyard, and the autosave is a bit before that, in the Deepest Wastes of Cania. I've saved copies of the quicksave and autosave.

The problem is, I can't load any of these saves. It gets to the point where it says "Loading area", and the progress bar finishes, and then the game freezes. I've tried leaving it for a while, but it still won't load, and I have to end the task to get out of it.

I AM able to load saves in the original campaign, or start a new game in HotU. I haven't tried reinstalling yet, but wondering if there are any other suggestions.

Do you have any mods/overrides installed?
Also if you haven't already, try to disable Shiny Water in the graphics options. I had it once that in certain areas i couldn't load my saves when it was enabled.

I checked that, and Shiny Water was already disabled. I tried setting the graphics to minimum settings, but still had the same result, with all 3 saves.

I don't have any mods or overrides installed, except the ones that were included in the GoG installer. I modified Rizolvir in chapter 2, but haven't modified anything in chapter 3.

Update: I'm now unable to load the main campaign as well. Tried to reload after opening a chest and getting crap, and got the message:
"Could not load Module
Could not unpack module"

So I'll try reinstalling unless I find something about that error somewhere.

Update 2: Fixed that problem, it was a corrupted Current Game folder. Now back to the original problem.

Is your game installed in Program Files? Do you have admin rights on and UAC off? Do you have any anti-malware programs running?

The game isn't installed in Program Files, it's on a separate drive from the OS. The game is set to run as administrator, and UAC is in minimal mode. I have VIPRE antivirus running in real-time mode, MalwareBytes I use but not in realtime.

Update: I tried loading it with VIPRE active protection disabled; no change. Same with VIPRE completely shut down.

Separate drive? As in thumb drive? Maybe that's what's causing corruption? I assume you haven't made any other changes to the game, or done anything to your system recently? Sorry, I don't know what else to say.

Not a thumb drive. I have my operating system and most software on a 160GB Intel 320 SSD, my games and swap partition on a 360GB OCZ Agility SSD, and a 1TB Seagate HDD for storage, all internal (my case is a Coolermaster HAF-X, tons of room for drives).

Haven't made any modifications to my system lately, been playing NWN, BG1 and 2 for about the past 4 months. And no, the only changes I've made to the game have been on Rizolvir and a couple of other merchants in chapter 2 (removing the upgrade cap, which worked, and the selling cap, which didn't). I tried restoring the original file for chapter 2, but that didn't help either.

Even if your saves had become corrupted, I don't know why you wouldn't be able to start a new game.

Inability to start a new game was caused by a corrupted currentgame folder. Rebooting deleted it, and I got the game working again. So the only issue is those 3 saves in HotU that I can't load.

I re-downloaded to make sure I have the latest version, and re-installed, and the problem hasn't gone away. So I guess the saves are corrupted.

I tried starting a new game using the character from those saves, and got the same result. So it seems like it's the character file (player.bic) that's become corrupted.

In case anyone else runs into the same problem, I found the reason: too many spells prepared. Having more than 255 spells prepared, across all classes, makes saves unable to load. Obviously, this can pretty much only happen with a debug-modified character, with godly intelligence.
