Neverwinter Nights 1
I'm in the midst of Hordes of the Underdark for the first time in the Duergar camp on the Maker's island, and for some reason my game is crashing every time I try to load. My two most recent saves don't work, but I do have very old ones that are okay (it would be a shame though, I'd lose around 2 hours of progress). I heard the .tga files can get corrupted so I tried deleting those but it didn't fix the problem. I'd like to post the save file but the forum isn't letting me post a link.

Thanks in advance, I'm at my wit's end.

Go to your save folder under NWN installed directory. Find the save you want to load and make a backup of it. Delete the portrait.tga file. Open the game and try to load again.

I just had to disable shiny water. I'm not sure why it suddenly caused an issue since I've been using it for the entire 180 hours I've played this game, but that did the trick.

Congratulations on resolving your recent crash issue!

One note about the supposed shiny water fix... what this infers is that your driver is just barely on the edge of rendering OpenGL the way it was intended to. Depending on your video card, you may need to test some driver swapping once you decide to play the newer, high-definition graphics that CEP and other customizations utilize. Should any other "unexplainable" problems or anomalies occur in the future, please post your system and hardware specs along with the incident report.

Another common fix is to disable sound in the nwn.ini (for some reason, this can affect how the game handles graphics, but pls don't ask me why).
I know you have this fixed, but just thought I would throw this one out there, since it had caused me crashes repeatedly: The Grease spell. For some reason that spell seemed to cause crashes for me a lot and as soon as I removed it as a memorized spell from the people I could, it helped immensely.

I'd be really surprised if my video card or drivers weren't up to snuff. I have a Geforce GTX 660M and I keep the drivers updated regularly. Thanks for the suggestions though! I'll keep them in mind if I run into any other problems.

Actually, it's just the opposite situation. For AMDs, the older drivers seemed to work just fine but the Catalyst caused lots of problems trying to digest NWN's ancient version of OpenGL.

The drivers for NVidia products, generally, seem to have caused fewer problems but even my Nvidia has random burps that seem to defy logic. They are not severe enough for me to begin testing older driver versions, however.

Also, there are some versions of DirectX that do not work well with NWN, but that's another issue altogether.
