So during all my playthroughs of the game, I've often encountered the problem that says the following:

"You have multiple items equipped or spells active that give an Armor AC Bonus and the effects will not stack"

Now I'm sure we've all encountered that problem several times in each of our own playthroughs, but to this day, I still don't understand it. I mean, I get that I have too many things on me that give me extra AC, but I wanna know what defines this limit. How do I know the limit of the AC I can get? Because what confuses me even more about this is when I give somebody a Ring Of Protection +1 and I get the message but then I give a +2 one to that same person and I still get the message but they get a +1 AC Bonus, and the same happening with a +3 ring but instead a +2 Bonus and so on.

There's no limit. The only problem is that AC bonus items don't stack. If you use an item that gives +1 to AC, it'll give you +1 AC. If you use an item that gives +1 and another one that gives +3, you'll get +3 to AC. You can treat this as a nullification of the inferior item bonus.

When calculating AC, there are several types of bonuses. For most of these bonuses, only the highest bonus applies (dodge bonuses seem to be the exception).

For example, if you are wearing a Ring of Protection +1 (deflection), Bracers of Armor +1 (armor), Amulet of Armor +1 (natural), and then you cast Mage Armor (+1 each of deflect/armor/natural/dodge) on yourself, then your AC will only go up by 1 because the items already provide bonuses of the non-dodge types provided by Mage Armor.

A longer description is here.

............. I don't even need to read the longer description after experimenting in the game just now...... That makes... so much... sense.... And I briefly wondered a while back what those terms were supposed to mean....

You'd think the tutorial would explain all this.

I can't even begin to understand how you thought I'd understand anything from this.

I meant that the AC bonuses from the items doesn't stack. If you have two items that improve your AC, you'll only get a bonus from the better item. Of course there's also the case with different types of AC bonuses as pointed above.

I believe he was talking about equipping items of the same type (for example, two rings of protection). Only the higher bonus would apply.

They do stack, though. Just if they're not of the same AC bonus.

Yeah, I forgot to do that earlier. Only remembered to do it now.
